Our cars

Toyota 86: bought this year, absolute blast to drive made me realise that light weight is more fun than heavy but powerful.

2009 SSV ute: love this car, has it since near new, will most likely keep it for life, was my dream car when I bought it. Goes to show that this 11 year old ute is far superior to any ute made in 2020. I drive a 2019 hilux which is pretty ordinary in comparison to something a decade older than it.

2006 sv6 vz wagon: bought near new as well the grilfriend’s car she bought as she thought my old by wagon was a great car. And she kept it ever since. She loves it so much she intended to sell it when buying the 86 but she couldn’t let it go. So we are keeping it.

1985 ford Telstar tx5 turbo. My grandmother’s car she bought new off the lot in 1985 and has been her garage queen ever since and drove it up until last year it has low kays and kept in excellent condition. But I wanted to make sure she didn’t sell it so it has become my car to drive which I just thoroughly enjoy. But being in Victoria I haven’t even driven it this year with stupid pandemic, which the 86 has met the same fate of sitting in a garage because we can’t do day trips.

Here’s my current project doing what I can during the lockdown

It’s a WB Holden one tonner has an injected 5lt, 4 wheels discs, statesman front gaurds and doors electric windows central locking and GTS dash

In reality I should have just replaced the door but I was bored and it was a good way to learn to tig weld 😂😂78191d120fb488bb3e9b22beb13c1112.jpg

WB Tonner will come up good I think. On my HJ tonner I seam welded the chassis as I didn't like the chassis sage that the utes didn't have but the tonners did. Made a massive difference, chassis flex was completely gone. Another mod I never did do but wished I did was piss off the whole tonner chassis and put in a shorter ute or panelvan one. Shorter wheelbase is the goal and I saw it done on another tonner and that day on I regreted not doing it every time I was parking my tonner. Just before you attempt to stuff with a chassis if indeed you do, measure the chassis holes diagonally and make sure it is true. Next, put the chassis on a flat concrete floor and measure from the floor up on all diagonals checking for twist before sinking in about 10kgs of weld stiffening it. Welding is pretty straight forward as they don't flex when welding but if it isn't straight before you start, you just made it a whole heap worse.

HZ and WBs also have a tighter turning circle with the RTS on the front end so if you do go the chassis swap idea, target one of these rather than a HQ, HJ or HX part. This brings in other problems though as all HQ and HJ chassis, the front end sub-frame which was simply attached to a ute or one tonner rear chassis were all welded to handle a possible 350 so welds where larger where as the later models were only expected to have a 308 and have much less spot welds. The chassis steel is the same, just the amount of welds changed. The whole range, HQ -WB suffered from chassis cracks around the rear of the front towers so atleast address this well known problem whether the chassis comes off or not as in NSW they fail rego on this cracking and it does always get checked.

While on the chassis while the chassis is off the car take the time to remove the sway bar saddle mounts and weld in nuts inside the chassis on the front end. When you start pushing the car on corners the factory threads love to fail and most by now have nuts just sitting in the chassis. A proper nut welded inside the chassis to replace the factory thread solves this problem. I had this problem on my ute and the tonner until I did this mod. One of those jobs that takes 5 minutes with the chassis off but a different story when the car is complete.

Wow you got a c8? Have you received it yet? There is half a chance I will buy one but maybe in about five years, either that or a second hand Aston martin Vantage, which has been my goal car

I had an aston Martin, biggest Problem is service and parts cost, $5,000 service Bill and $10,000 clutch replacement and $6k Brake Pad and Rotor replacement, allow $20k a year is service and repair costs

Really enjoyed the "HQ-Z" era. Had 2 of them, both Panel vans which went to the occasional Saturday Drive-in theatre at North Ryde and sometimes to Dundas Drive-in.

Probably about the last commercials Holden built for anywhere in the country rather than just the city. Rust would kill them if you stopped maintaining it but looking back I would prefer swapping metal than non obtainable computer modules that kills all modern vehicles when the manufacturer decides to no longer maintain stock of stupid electronics that suits just one model.

Such a wasteful society we have become. Crush a whole vehicle with a perfectly working motor, gearbox and no rust all because you can't replace a faulty non obtainable air bag module or some other piece of electronics.
