Any Atari Lynx collectors out there?

Recommended Posts

Had to post this in hope someone would care :) (no one does at work or home).

I picked up lemmings yesterday for $5. Been looking for this for a while, then randomly walked into a cash converters... and there it was, made my day.

I have got a bit of a Lynx collection. I don't have Lemmings, and from what I know it is hard to find, so well done!!!

I am interested in what you think of the Lynx version. I played it heaps on the Amiga & Megadrive. The Amiga version had fantastic music!

Excellent find! Ive never been surprised by the cashies i walk into :(

i think my favourite game on the lynx so far is s.t.u.n runner. The most graphically impressive i have is Alpine Games, but most of the games in it aren't that much fun (then again, i don't really 'get' California Games which has a similar feel).

I'm keeping my eyes out for a complete Xenophobe. I think that'll be cool (",)

Yeah I am impressed with S.T.U.N. Runner also. One of my favourites is Klax. It is such a great version, great sampled speech. It is a joy to play.

Haven't really played it yet, apart from making sure it was working.

But i remember playing the Atari ST version to death, absolutely loved it.

Stun runner too is my favorite game, i also quite like toki as far as Lynx games go. Next i want to find shadow of the beast.

Yeah my brother had a lynx and toki.. awful hand-held console to play. It's so big and clunky but the specs were up there with the Gamegear back int he day..

Lynx II is a better shape than the first, not quite so clunky. I remember when the Lynx came out C+VG Magazine reported the Lynx was as powerful as an Amiga?

I actually find it to be very comfortable to hold. I have the mk I. Probably would have been a bit heavy with batteries, but since they don't last long i use a power supply. Like this, i find it more comfortable to use than it's contemporary- the Gameboy. You might have heard that Atari gave their focus group several sizes of console to try out. Most people preferred the larger size! Both the Gameboy and the Lynx suffer of course from having to hold them 'just so' to see the screen.

I haven't played mine for a few months now. All this talk has reminded me of my neglect. I'll have to slot in stun runner sometime over the weekend...

edit: just realised mines a mkII. Dunno why i thought it was a mkI...

I've never found the size of my Lynx 1 to be a problem.

I think I've spent the most time on Slime World and Rygar.

I like STUN Runner too.

I didn't think the vertical shooter was much good - can't remember the name of the title off the top of my head.

The people marketing the Lynx should have been shot.

Colour screen, better sound etc than the gameboy - it should have killed it.

Ive always used the lynx mk1, and told myself i need the mk2. So when i picked up lemmings the other week, they had a mk2 for $15, so i picked that up too (plus 5 other games - lemmings the highlight though).

And i have to say, the mk1 feel much more solid, the mk2 feels too flimsy for me. But it does look nicer.

Either way though neither fit in my pocket :(

My lynx collection got a good top up from the markets the other week, a lynx II, carry bag and 28 games: Rygar, Bill&Teds Excellent Adventure, Shanghai, Gordo 106, Pac-Land, Batman Returns, Turbo Sub, Pinball Jam, Warbirds, Scrapyard Dog, Casino, Ms Pacman, Steel Talons, RoadBlasters, Klax, Hard Drivin', Ishido, Checkered Flag, Switchbalde II, California Games, Gauntlet, Double Dragon, Paperboy, Chips Challenge, Blue Lighting, Dirt Larry, Ninja Gaiden III and Crystal Mines II

Half the games are ex-rental with serial numbers engraved on the cartridge, but there are also about 10 boxed games. Good find:)

I used to own the Lynx I but sold it a long time ago. Started my collection from eBay (the more expensive way unfortunately) and kept buying Lynx II's until I got one I was happy with.

Boxed: Pinball Jam, STUN Runner, Klax, Pac-Land, Steel Talions, Warbirds, Gauntlet, Robotron, Chips Challenge, California Games

Non-Boxed: STUN Runner, Ishido, Jimmy Connors Tennis, Awesome Golf, Shadow of the Beast, TOKI, Basketbrawl, Hockey

Games I'm looking for: Crystal Mines II, Double Dragon, ElectroCop, Gates of Zendocon, Super Off-Road, Xybots

As you can see I have a second STUN Runner if anyone's interested in swapping for another game.

Also I have a couple of Lynx II's that I bought off eBay, one which speaker doesn't work (seller forgot to mention) and I can't remember about the second one but both didn't come with power supplies. I will probably end up selling them on eBay or if you are interested let me know and I can take another look at them.

I think the Lynx suffered because it lurked int he shadows of the Gameboy which was more popular. It was atari's comeback leap into hand-held just like Sega had the Gamegear which also was a cool bit of kit only it was far too expensive for your average joe to buy. I remember seeing the Gamegears tv tuner and thinking whoa.. that's so cool.. Lynx 2 was a better looking console but then Gameboy came out with the colour and it was pretty much game over for it. Anybody know how many games were made for the Lynx?

Latest retro gamer mag says 85. But then they probably aren't including games made after Ataris demise- like Alpine Games...

And like others have said, price was the big killer for pretty much all of Gameboys competitors. That and all those well known titles the Gameboy had. Tetris wouldn't have hurt ;)
