It's an original Taito L-shaped Space Invaders boardset where someone has swapped out the original ROMs/EPROMs for a modified version called Bumper Action.

The EPROMs (which will be the three voltage 2708's) could be replaced with mask ROMs or EPROMs with the original Space Invaders code. Careful of the strapping (jumpers) though if you use anything other than 2708's as it will need changing - plug in, for example, 2716's and with the existing strapping you'll destroy them!

I had a closer look at the "ship" there Rick, and it rings a bell.

there was a SI cocktail at my local squash courts when I was about 9, and it had the same "ship" - like literally, it looks like a small "tall ship" - I remember thinking that was weird compared to the ones in the city.

So the "hack" was out and about in the wild... maybe there was an oz seller of customised roms "e.g. Your Company Name Here" for SI and other games?:unsure

Cheers

Jacob

It's a Midway L-Board type but made by Taito?!. I've never seen one like that. The L-Board hardware is manufactured by Midway and usually says 'Midway' on there and it's just B/W, no colour. The version in MAME uses less ROMs and is purely B/W. It looks like the board uses blue and green? So that version isn't dumped.

The 'upright' board is also a lot different to the Midway version. I suspect Taito made their own version and made it colour.

A pic of the Midway version is here....

http://www.system16.com/boards/invaders.jpg

(It's my board). You can clearly see the 'upright' board is very different.

The ones in MAME are documented here and run on the above pictured board....

http://maws.mameworld.info/maws/mamesrc/src/mame/drivers/mw8080bw.c

they are 'invaders' and 'invad2ct'

The game name is just a hex-edit hack that any dummy who had access to a hex editor could have done. The other changes (ship and shields hatching and other changes) have been done by Taito.

However since it's a colour version it is unique and should be backed up. If you can arrange to get the ROMs dumped and the hardware documented I'm sure MAMEDev would appreciate it. You could either loan me the board for a week or arrange it yourself locally.

I've stumbled across a few Taito L-shaped boardsets of this type, ie with the standard 2 x 18 way edge connector instead of Midway's molex connectors. All of them have been black & white as I think this one is, the colours seen in the screenshots are no doubt down to the overlays on the black & white monitor.
