How to do angles - can't source a protractor

Recommended Posts

G'day guys,

Back in the day when I did woodwork at school I used to use a bevel and a protractor to mark all the angle bits and then hand saw.

Well I may ditch the hand saw bit, but buggered if I can find a protractor anywhere up here in brissy. I've visited five hardware supply places and now called another three. Seems no one needs them now a days.

Now I found a kinda protractor with an arm off of it, but that was going for $60. Seems crazy to spend that kind of money. I'm tempted to go and a plastic one from a student supply shop thats used for engineering graphics (used to use em myself), just not sure on the accuracy of them is all.

Am I just behind the times and there's a simpler way or some new wiz bang tool that does it, is there a shop somewhere in brissy (pref south side) that sells such gear, or have I just lost the plot?

You have lost the plot.

Most prob the case. If they had a smiley in a straightjacket I would use it right now :D

Go to a stationery shop and you will find them.

They will have the plastic ones and may have the adjustble one with long metal arms.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking but I read a post on BYOAC where it was said not to use a plastic protractor that you used to use in school as they're not accurate. :unsure

you'll probably want a saw board and a protractor of some sort. Don't trust the degree markings on your circular saw, if it has them! Measure everything with the protractor, preferrably a good protractor (e.g. the kind a machinist would use, not the cheap plastic ones you get at an art supply store)

The link for the above quote is here

Prob is, trying to source one... buggered if I know where to try...

Nice link spacies, thanks for that mate.

The expensive one looks like the go, but it is expensive. the cheap one is without a doubt affordable, but I would worry about accuracy and those arms things just seem a pain. You'd think someone would make a simple one that is around the $20 mark.

you could always use your old high school trig and a ruler.

Lol Brootal, your right and I never thought of that. That's actually a very good alternative. I spose I just make a triangle based on lengths of whole units (say mm's) where one angle is the angle I want. seems elegant and may be a goer. thanks mate. :)

I'll still dream about that steel one from spacies link. So bloody frustrating, you read the forums at MYOAC and it's obvious stuff in the states is so much cheaper and you can find it... sigh...

Newsagencies sell them even..

Get metal one @ Bunnings

You need to read above mate :), I quoted a post on BYOAC saying that the plastic ones kids use are next to useless. I have no way to verify this, but thats what the post said. :rolleyes

I went to three hardware shops and a tool specialist shop and none of them had a metal protractor. They all had weird stuff with arms and such going for $90+ but none had a simple metal protractor.

I then used the Yellow pages and rang quite a few shops, some that are word work specialist shops and some that for for Fitting and Machining shops. none of them had them.

Only spacies has been able to provide a link to an online shop that has the metal ones for sale, and the price is a lot higher than I would have imagined.

I may have to revert to the plastic ones, but I have some angles on my cab that will be visible so I do wish for good accuracy. May have to bite the bullet and buy the online one for $78.90. Just seems crazy when my circular saw I brought yesterday cost a tad over $100.

god I'm stupid, never thought of ebay :) thanks for that mate...

looks like some good prices as well. though as per usual shipping is a tad high, but that is to be expected :)

again, thanks for that mate. means I'll have to delay some of my stuff, but I would rather the right tools :)
