Connecting arcade buttons to an Xbox

I've been doing some thinking about how best to run MAME on my up coming cabinet project. The cheapest, most reliable way to run it seems to be through an old Xbox (I got access to some hardware that can install a new OS on the console's EEPROM so no need to chip;) ).

 

My biggest concern is how to connect the Arcade controls stick and buttons to the Xbox. Any ideas?

You could buy a x-arcade control panel and adapter to use on the x-box . And if you dont like the look of x-arcade you could take the buttons out of it .

hack an xbox pad - xarcade gear is total ass,

don't bother with it.

 

normally 3rd party pads have bigger pads to solder to.

I use to have this kit and also the one from ultimarc (OzStick may also sell them, if not get them for you as he's the Aussie distributer).

Problem with the xbox it relies heavily on analogue controls for lots of games and menus. I think my intentions were the same as your long time ago but couldn't configure the Mame for xbox to use digital for menu selection.
