get tiny xp for your cabinet and download NOW before its gone!!!

Has anyone used tinxp rev06 as a everyday os for surfing the web ,playing games , etc and had problems ? Because im thinking about putting on my laptop which has a genuine copy of windows xp to make things faster and to use in the cab im building for mame and normal computer stuff .

OK, my turn to chime in, and only because I tried out MicroXP for the first time this weekend.

I have revived my mame aspirations, so am going through the process of setting up my mobo etc.

I 'setup' microXP, and I have a few observations:

1 - The setup is indeed tiny. As in an 88mb .iso (My collection of drivers for the mobo, wireless and vid were 144mb :))

2 - The setup was fast

3 - the boot time is impressive

I am not too keen on the 'branding' with 'MicroXP' popping up while it boots etc, but meh that's no problem

Now my problems I had...

Note: I have a DFI Lanparty 875pro motherboard. From all observations it is pretty pimp (for its time), has all sorts of stuff on it (4 IDE, 2 Sata, Raid blah blah). Not my first choice, but a hand me down from my gaming bro, so came at the right price.

My problems could be this mobo, or this user (lots and lots of pro experience with XP, none at all with MicroXP)

1 - The 'standard' driver package from Micro made the machine sucky.

2 - The WiFi adapter drivers once installed, appeared to do bugger all - no networks found - I can find 4 other than my own with my laptop right next to it

3 - Cannot install the mobo .inf files - they reckon my mobo is not the 'pro875' which it most certainly is - so something is broken there... same with the intel app accelerator (fancy name for chipset drivers)

4 - The video drivers installed OK, but were not exactly speedy due to '3' above

5 - The onboard audio drivers said 'get bent' as they also believe the mobo does'nt have the right chipset

6 - same for onboard LAN

7 - I didn't even think about bothering with the raid crap

So, it does not look like it is right for me... Which is OK, the install time was pretty quick, so I burned about an hour or two checking it out.

Unless someone here knows (and let's me know) that I'm doing something very wrong, I'll just go to XP.

Is there really a huge difference between Micro or Tiny XP? I'd imagine a similar set of problems...

---------------------

Do I think you should put it on a laptop? Hmm no. With all the weird hardware and necessary drivers, I think you'll be in a lot of strife getting it to work.

If you are willing to get it to work, then I guess it would be 'worth it'. I honestly don't see any way for massive speed improvements from Tiny/Micro, just faster boot times. A lot of the 'stuff' ripped out is what makes XP (fat) easier to use as a day to day machine.... Which is OK for mame etc, but would be annoying as hell on a daily use PC.

If you want to try it, by all means. Just make sure you image your current machine, so if you hate it you can go back pretty quick...

I tried getting a network going in MicroXP just now, and I could not do it. Then I read in the release notes - No Network support! It can browse the web though and maybe FTP though that. My guess is that TinyXP would have network support reading this.

in the BIOS to boot from your CD-ROM drive.

Only install this operating system onto a freshly formatted partition or hard disk.

There is no upgrade option available, because the option is removed. You do not

need any product key in this release, the installation of TinyXP is unattended, apart

from in the very beginning where you choose which drive or partition to install to.

All installations are set to US English. This can be changed after installation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you boot from this

CD you have five options:

1 - TinyXP With IE/OE/WMP (With Drivers)

2 - TinyXP With IE/OE/WMP (Without Drivers)

3 - TinyXP Without IE/OE/WMP (With Drivers)

4 - TinyXP Without IE/OE/WMP (Without Drivers)

5 - Boot Into Acronis Backup + Restore

Abbreviations from above:

IE = Internet Explorer 7 Web Browser

OE = Outlook Express Email Client

WMP = Windows Media Player 11

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All four installations of TinyXP include the following items,

these are all automatically installed along with Windows:

Service Pack 2 For Windows XP

133 Hotfixes Up To 12th June 2007

Flash Player v9.0.28.0

Opera v9.21 (only installed on options without Internet Explorer 7)

Prio (Task Manager Priority Saver) v1.9.6

Royale Noir and Royale Blue Themes

Thunderbird v2.0.0.0 (only installed on options without Outlook Express)

Vista Aero Glass Theme v4

Vista Drive Indicator v3.1.1.0

VMware 5 Tools v5.5.4 Build 44386 (only installed if you install Windows in VMware 5)

Other added items in system32:

cdimage.exe (Lets you make ISO's on the command line)

CDR.exe (This is whats used on the right click of optical drives to close the CD tray)

lame_enc.dll (Many encoding programs require this for MP3 encoding)

layout.dll (This gives you the "Save desktop icon layout" option on right click of Recycle Bin)

makecab.exe (More up to date version that actually works)

On-Screen Keyboard (osk.exe) (nLite removes this as part of a bigger component)

pskill.exe (Kill processes on the command line, without needing switches)

sleep.exe (Make a batch command file pause for a given period of time)

Video res changer to force 1024 x 768 on install (XP normally installs @ 640x480)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is a breakdown of the five boot options:

For Microsoft fans...

The first two options include Internet Explorer 7 Web Browser, Outlook Express Email Client and

Windows Media Player 11 so Windows XP is completely up to date and as Bill Gates intended.

For people who don't like Microsoft programs...

The second two options do not include Internet Explorer 7, Outlook Express, or Windows Media

Player 11. In the second two options where IE/OE/WMP are removed, Opera v9.21 is installed to

replace Internet Explorer and Mozilla Thunderbird v2.0.0.0 is installed to replace Outlook Express.

Automatic Driver Installation...

Options one and three both include drivers to cover the following: Chipset,

CPU, Ethernet LAN Cards, SATA (Mass Storage) and Wireless Ethernet.

No Drivers Included...

Options two and four do not contain those drivers - this is in case you have SATA

problems with the first or third options, or if you just want to install your own drivers.

Acronis Backup + Restore...

Option five allows you to backup your existing partition(s) before installing Windows, or you can

quickly restore a backup made previously with Acronis. This version of Acronis True Image Home

is safe to use if you want to back up Windows Vista.

[ATTENTION!]

---WHEN YOU INSTALL DRIVERS MAKE SURE TO WAIT FOR ALL THE SEPARATE DRIVER MODULES TO BE INSTALLED BEFORE YOU REBOOT, THIS IS [NOT!] DONE AUTOMATICALLY!!---

You need to be patient when plugging in those drivers, after you started a driver install you must make sure that all the driver components has been installed before reboot (can be multiple popups) ..this does only require for a click on the "automatic install" button...multiple times if you are installing Audio for example. This is a result of the Shell Hardware Detection beeing deactivated...will save resources but requires patience. Decision was made to do this considering that drivers wont be installed everyday...but you surely would like to have the extra resources gained at hand everyday...right?

[issues]

ADD/REMOVE Program will have issues if not all systemdrivers are properly plugged in, make sure you install all your drivers before messing about with it.

[Greets]

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated!

A side note:
Please try to be realistic when it comes to what to expect of functionality, this is meant for hardcore gaming or benching primarily...not as an 24/7 OS that can install and run all those gadgets you might think of.

I'll give it a go, although it look slike it may be even more minimal than Micro was...

At least it is a reasonable sized download... TinyXP is around 700mb - and a torrent at that. No chance of grabbing a torrent at work (will get a big smack if I try that!)

I just tried MicroXP with a network connection tonight for the first time. I had the computer running, plugged in the Network Cable but it still had the Network the Red Crossmark on it in the task bar. I rebooted the computer and the Network is connected now but I cannot see the network. I might need to load Client for Microsoft networks? I'm not sure will try it out tomorrow.

Have you had any luck with your connection?

Ryan

I've had no trouble getting it on the network, and can browse the web, etc. Trouble is there is "ipconfig" under command prompt. I can also ping it from another XP machine on the network but I can't connect to it via Map Network Drive or similar. It always asks for credentials and rejects no matter what is entered. I tried setting up a user on both machines with the same logon credentials - no joy.

Has anyone managed to map a network drive to or browse shares on a TinyXP PC?

Cheers

LT.
