IFPA Australian Championship Series 2020

Recommended Posts

Hello all tournament players.

The IFPA Australian Championships will be held 14-16 Feb 2020.

Venue is Coolangatta TImezone, The Strand 72-80 Marine Parade, Coolangatta, Qld 4225

A huge thanks the AMD in Sydney for kindly donating the Championship Prize money. And to Timezone for allowing us to hold the event at their facility.

The Main event will be held as per previous years, that being a qualifying stage on Saturday, 15th Feb commencing 9am. Finals will be Sunday 16th Feb commencing 9 am. Details of this event below.

There will be a warm-up event on the Friday evening commencing 7pm. This will be a 7-strike "fair strike" event open to everyone. Run via Matchplay, with the usual 0-1-1-2 strikes in 4 player groups (0-1-2 for 3 players).

There will be closing Flip Frenzy on the Sunday after the finals of the IFPA ACS, again open to everyone, for 3 hours. Hoping to start this around the 4pm mark for those booking airfares. Depends of course how long the finals will take, but from past years should be fine for that start time.

During Pool stage of the ACS, there will be a Matchplay event for those not competing commencing at 10am.

Saturday night will be a free night to socialise, explore the town, organising your own "stall ball" events if you like.

All pinball machines will be on Free Play for the 3 days. There may be a side "money comp" on Celts depending on availability for fun as well.

The main ACS event is open to the top 48 players qualified from the 2019 events held in Australia per IFPA ranking system. In cases where invited players cannot attend, the list of invitees will extend down the rankings until the number of 48 players is reached. Rules for the event can be found at https://www.ifpapinball.com/acs/

The event will run as per previous years:

The pool stage will consist of 4-player matches. 7-5-3-1 scoring in each match.

Players will be split into three pools, according to the final ACS standings:

Pool A: 1,6,7,12,13,18,19,24,25,30,31,36,37,42,43,48.

Pool B: 2,5,8,11,14,17,20,23,26,29,32,35,38,41,44,47.

Pool C: 3,4,9,10,15,16,21,22,27,28,33,34,39,40,45,46.

There will be 5 rounds with 3 matches per round.

Each player will be grouped with each other player in their pool exactly once.

The top 5 players from each pool will advance to the elimination stage. In addition, a wild card entry will be given to the best 6th placed finisher.

Ties for qualifying positions will be resolved by a one game playoff. Players failing to advance from a playoff within their pool will remain eligible for any playoff for the wild card.

Sunday – ELIMINATION STAGE

The elimination stage will consist of best-of-5, head-to-head matches. The loser of a match is eliminated.

Players will be ranked by most pool stage points, then most ACS qualifying points.

In each round, the highest-ranked player will play the lowest-ranked player, the second-highest-ranked player will play the second-lowest-ranked player, and so on.

The higher-ranked player in a match will get choice of machine for game 1. Choice will then alternate.

Prizes - Trophies for top 4 finalists. All finalists will receive a medallion. Cash prizes also for top 8 players.

Costs for the events will be:

Main IFPA ACS Event - $50 per player

Friday 7-Strike - $25 per player

Saturday Group Matchplay - $25 per player

Sunday Flip Frenzy - $25 per player

All these events will be IFPA endoursed, and cash prizes will be paid out from cash pool, determined on the day.

More information including qualifiers/attendees will be posted here.

Is there a cut off date for when people can say whether they are in or not? Could the top 40 players on the list start registering interest now rather than waiting until the new year?

Current standings are here - https://encapsulated.com.au/acs/

Sorry but you are living in dreamworld if you think the higher ranked people will be considerate enough to make it possible for the balance of people to book anything including the cheap accommodation...

I have noticed this since I started playing pinball comps.... That might be why I am playing less these days.

I agree with your request, but this is the new world....Full of ignorance

(Rank as of 10/12/19) - Player - Interested/Going (Y/N)

We are actually beta testing this already in the page itself. Designated admins with a username/password can mark players as confirmed or declined and that moves the cutoff automatically when a spot is declined.

For qualifying reasons, we can't show any "public" cutoff before the end of the year tho, unless Luke and Dan are fine with that?

Re higher ranked people being not considerate... Well, guess what @DAG, I'm maintaining this page and I developed the automated system so we have a clear realtime view of the acceptances and people can book as soon as possible. Maybe I'm the exception from the top 48? I suggest you calm down on the derogatory comments tho, it's been a lot lately, and it's really not helping.

Bit harsh. I know most of the people on that list and I would say most of them are considerate. As Dan Robar commented last year "Can I just say, helping manage most of these events for so many years now and having to personally chase up most of the players so that everyone entitled gets the opportunity to attend, there are always a select few who either won't respond, take several attempts before they respond or even worse. The majority respond very quickly or are very good with communication.

The email will normally go out the first week in January. We have to wait for all events at the end of the year to be submitted and entered as they count towards the rankings. Some results come in last minute and many people are away or going on leave. It doesn't normally take long to get a response back from most once the email has gone out. If I have them on file. I thank the people who get in touch with me or help me get those emails so I can contact those I don't have quickly.

This year, with 16 extra spots available, the positions filled up pretty quickly. Luke and I have been very impressed with how many of the Top 48 have accepted the invitation. It has been an awesome response compared to previous years with only 32 positions available.

The ACS was originally brought about to run simultaneously with the rest of the Championship Series around the world. That has slightly changed with other countries dates changing, but most are early in the new year as they reflect last years rankings.

Luke and I have talked about changing the date in the past, as we have of increasing the player limit. With so many events now on the calendar and Pincade so close it becomes harder and harder to find a more suitable date. Maybe it's a discussion that should continue as this event continues to grow and become even more relevant with future planned growth."

Possible to get a machine list?

Would love too, but still awaiting responses from the local folk who we need to donate machines. Time Zone will have the latest Stern games there, and I'll be bringing JJP Pirates and Woz, ACNC and AMH from spooky, Harlem, at least 1 em, JM. Hoping for some more earlier solid states and em's to mix it up a bit. As soon as I have a list Ill post it on the first post.

Well, let me break that mold by giving an early heads up that I won’t be coming along at this stage.

Too much work on, NZ champs is late January, and Pincade is just a few weeks later, lots of work to do to prepare for that. :)

Bucking the perceived trend and giving plenty of notice of my intentions. :lol

Just booked my flights so I am 100% in. Currently sitting in 19th place. Of course if the 30 or so people below me all suddenly have 100+ point increases...... :redface

  • 2 weeks later...
Chances are that I will not be able to make, but there is a chance that I might. I am going to have to say no at this point, but come closer to the date if there is a spot that needs taking and I can happen to take it, I will.

Speaking of attendance, the rankings page now shows who’s invited (pending any results that still need to go to IFPA but I think they are all in?).

https://encapsulated.com.au/acs/

IFPA registered players will get an official email but happy to take any declined/confirmed from here as well to get the ball rolling.

Remember if you decline the invite, this is final and you can’t take your spot back unless all the options have been exhausted and there’s a last minute available spot.
