Retrenched and looking for career change, electronics.

Recommended Posts

All,

A while ago I was retrenched from an IT manager position and while its been great spending time with the kids and working on the house it's time to look at employment options.

One option I've been thinking about has been a career in electronics which has always been a hobby since I was a kid.

What I would like to find out from those working in the field is how you go about the learning and qualifications required, what the job is like day to day and what opportunities are available.

PM preferred.

Cheers,

Clint.

Go contracting clint. even if its helpdesk. talk your way into a project mismanager position if you can

all this gig will give you is a love of alcohol an a serious dislike for human interaction.

modern gear is all throwaway and order a new one. even if you can find a field tech position the board jockey work is about as exciting as delivering pizza.

legacy gear is good for repair work but its all owned by legacy customers who all want to pay legacy rates (the same price they paid in 1987) and most are still using the same tech they used then as well so its not easy work to find.

what are all the microfich/photocopier/printer/install techs doing now? probably it management ..

thinking back to some of the best techs an installers i know/ have worked with. one is driving uber, two are working in minimum wage retail, one went back to sales, ones driving trucks, ones working for a sparky as a data fairy. hmm .. none of them working a bench full time.

electronics is dead here.

prost!

Yep, agree with all above. I watched the repair places slowly disappear over the years at the same time my repairs also slowed with the Chinese market leading people to buy new gear instead of getting their old stuff fixed.

Digital recording replaced Mechanical VCR's and easy obtainable finance encouraged people to buy now and pay later.

By all means learn electronics as a hobby if you enjoy it, there's heaps of info around.

I still repair electronics at board level, but there is certainly less demand for it these days. If you did get into electronics repair as a job, you'd need to be skilled in working on equipment that people want to spend money on. This is often specialised equipment with little to no data available. Not something you would find easy coming from a hobby experience level.
