Ultimate Multicart for Atari 8 bit Build Thread.

I'm going to have a crack on putting together this open source SD multicart board for myself so this thread is a bit of a placeholder. I just ordered the pcb to get manufactured @ PCBway cost was $20.29AUD including postage for 5 PCB's (that's for cheaper postage)

https://github.com/robinhedwards/UltimateCart/

Project link above.

All the parts are available from Mouser, I'll do a full list of current part numbers once I get them and confirm.

Grabbed a cheap Altera Mini Usb Blaster from ebay to program the FPGA via JTAG

One thing I don't have is a 3D printer. If somebody can help by printing me out the cartridge shell and let me know the cost I'd be grateful.

I'll also have 4 PCB's left over and will be happy to give them away to other AA members who want to have a go.

I have a 3D printer that does PLA if that's suitable.

If so, I need to get another roll of filament either way, do you have a colour preference?

This is what the included shell design looks like. I've attached the files they are in .stl format what ever that is :unsure, as for colour what ever you got mate I'm not fussy.

PCB's arrived today...1 week, not bad for second cheapest postage and makes it worth while for 5 bucks of PCB's

Had them done in sexy yellow.......now the real fun begins. Look at all that surface mounted goodness.

I got spares if somebody wants to have a crack themselves.

Spent the afternoon finishing off the board, all components soldered on with the exception of a 1n4148. Thinking i had a heap of them forgot it was the SMD variety..off to Jaycar tomorrow.

Last step will be to download Quartus from Intel to program the FPGA...Fingers crossed.

Done a couple attempts at printing the cart with the new filament but it doesnt want to stick to the tape.

Will get some fresh tape, up the temp and try again.

No stress Adam. I thought about and and decided to save my pennies for my own 3D printer. I was considering the Creality Ender 5

Success!

After working out driver problems with the cheap Chinese USB Blaster (kept blue screening windows 10) and a smoke scare that was caused from me installing the xtal around the wrong way I managed to power up and program the FPGA with Quartus Prime 15.1 Programmer.

IMG_20191019_154103.thumb.jpg.009bad276423508e56962bfe1622b2f9.jpg

I had to use my phone and zoom in 8x because I couldn't see the dot even under a magnifying glass.

This is installed wrong.

Tests done on my XEGS. I found most games needed the keyboard attached.

Who ever thought you'd see Space Harrier on an Atari 8 Bit. Running fine on the XEGS with 64k.

Conclusion.

What an amazing open source project. If your soldering skills are decent and a Atari 8 bit lover like me its worth having a go.

All soldering was done by hand, no stencils or solder paste used, just good quality solder and flux.

Amazing job as always mate. Well done!

I'm a Commodore man myself but I still love the old Atari stuff

Brad

Thanks mate and Pfft Commodore with its 16 shades of brown for a pallet :D

The XEGS in the pic is my very first computer Mum bought from Dick Smith in Wynnum. I was very envious of Commodore owners mainly due to the lack of any hardware and games available for the Atari other than carts.

Nice work mate, I just started another print with new tape and upped the temp by 20 degrees and it's laying down nicely.

Speed is set at 40% so it will take a while, currently at 3% after 30 mins.

@Arcade King

Edit: First half done...
