Most probably

All the ones I have used you pass the item through the centre of a coil.

FYI you can also use it to magnetise items too, very handy for screwdrivers

To magnetise you wave the item around on it and turn it off before removing

I have recently had problems with my balls sticking together on various games (BSD the worst) and getting stuck in the coffin in Metallica....

Do I bought one of those green wand degauser's from eBay but then thought that it would be good to measure how magnetised my balls were so I could then measure before and after using the degauser to know if what I had done actually had made a difference.

So I have been building a tool using an Arduino to measure the magmatism of my balls and almost done so onc complete will post a video or description of the tool and off it or the green wand degauser actually work.

Carbon steel balls don't get the magnetizing issues that steel balls do.

to complicate things - technically they're all carbon steel its just the grade that varies

Ok all you cranky old miserable boffins ( Wiredoug, Autosteve et al..)....

Will this device do for demagnetising pinballs?

im guessing it would work ( if it doesnt throw them across the room lol) ... but I dont know for sure sorry.. my only game with magnets hasnt been played in 3-4 years.

Here is a quick video of the working prototype of the Arduino "Ball Magnetrometer"... I will post a longer video and discription later alnong with if the "Green Wand Degauser" actually does anything.

Great work! Fantastic tool for diagnosing magnetism issues.

The higher the carbon content the longer the magnetism remains in the steel.

That's also the main factor for ability harden stell through heat treatment.

That' why files make excellent magnets.

Actually just had a thought

Would a ball passing through a Getaway Super Charger get de-magnetised?

Probably

Haha the sale of Getaways and Star Wars is going to go through the roof

@LAP great tech! Have you tested the wand, really looking forward to your test results. Do you happen to have a Getaway?? [emoji3]
