Taito Space Invaders Upright Resto

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Have just dragged my Space Invaders out of long term storage so I thought I’d post a thread on the resto.

Have had the old girl since the mid 90s, but it stopped working during the 2000’s. Long work hours and a house move saw all my arcade stuff go into storage, but it’s time to finally get the Spacies up and running again.

The plan is to give it a basic tidy up and get it working again so we can enjoy it. Then over time I’ll work on some more detailed resto items like the coin door etc.

Here’s some starting pics, overall it’s in pretty reasonable condition.

Cheers

Ok, what’s that saying, “in for a penny, in for a pound”! I did say I was only going to tart it up and just get it running didn’t I. I got to thinking that I only want to do this once, so I’ve committed to a full resto.

Overall it’s in pretty reasonable condition. The new plan is to leave the cabinet artwork but try to colour match and touch up as best as I can. The black parts will be repainted and the hardware restored.

There’s a couple of scratches and the usual dings at the edges. Will try touch these up.

Inside is just grotty from years of dust, and a drink that was spilt inside.

It’s interesting how the drink seems to have gone in at the CPO, ran down the black screen cardboard, down the side to the power supply board, the down and pooled in the cabinet base. Not sure if you can see

Cabinet has been gutted ready for a good clean and the painting / touch ups.

Some wood repair on the cab top

And a heap of hardware to restore.

The monitor has some burn in, but I don’t recall it being an issue, will see how it goes.

The sound card was not in the cab, not sure where that went, but a have another board set.

More progress soon.

Best laid plans! Unfortunately not a lot of progress on my Spacies resto due to a work project, but a little progress.

I know there are differing schools of thought on the subject, but I like to replace electrolytic and Tantalum capacitors (re-cap) in old gear. So given I’ve got the cabinet stripped, I’ll re-cap the monitor, power supply, and coin counter boards, then fire them up on the bench to test them.

Here’s the coin counter board. Actually, my machine had the coin counter removed from it when I got it. Would like to put one back in so will need to research where it goes.

Here’s the power supply board.

Looks like someone had to replace a bridge rectifier at some stage, but didn’t have the correct part.

I also ordered the correct bridge rectifier so I’ll replace that too.

I’ve made a start on replacing the caps, but I don’t have all the correct parts yet. I do find it interesting when you compare 40 year old electrolytic caps to the modern day parts.

I’ve also touched up the faded paper speaker cone to get it looking black again. Came up a little too shiny, but it’ll really only be visible from the back.

Before

And after

That’s it for now. Will finish the re-cap when the rest of the parts arrive, and after Easter I’ll start taking some of the hardware in to be re-plated etc.

I will be following this with interest as I just picked up an empty cab like this last week

If you come across any leads on spare parts etc it would be appreciated

I will probably have some questions down the road

Good luck with the rebuild - looks great so far

Ponty, feel free to ask any questions, there’s some very knowledgeable people on here. Maybe consider posting a thread, would love to follow your journey with what you do with your Spacies cab.
