Re-setting up at the Bosssninja's

Recommended Posts

In 2015 we moved house and my pins went into storage at my daughter's place. There they stayed until renos were finished at the new place this year.

I put an APB out on AA to see if anyone could help son and me move the machines back and Dave (@djc ) came to the rescue in February.

Since then I've been trying to get them all up and running.

I'm going to post on this thread my progess and will no doubt need technical advice solving the issues as I find them (as my repair skills are limited). Pic 1 is the pins in storage . Pic 2 is Dave and me having finished the move. IMG20190222205847.thumb.jpeg.dc62675c1be9e6db3cda880e420430cb.jpegIMG20190223145543.thumb.jpeg.85f84100dfaaf3d5818599b9c7adcfef.jpeg

Next step was trying to fit my collection into the space. Somehow my machines must have multiplied while in storage (that's what I told Mrs Bossninja to explain how Grand Slam came about). Had to spill over into the garage - see pics

So I started with Pioneer. Powered up OK but when played, issue with bonus counter. This is one of the bits I do know something about. The shoulder bolt mechanism on the stepper was suffering from hardened grease. Cleaned up the unit remembering not to snap the shoulder bolt when removing. All good. So I decided to clean the glass and polish the playfield. Gave it a play. Problem now with scoring. 100s reel spinning on ball 1. 100s relay humming /working overtime. Do some trouble shooting (not my strength as doing things sequentially requires patience) and it seems to be the 'e' roll over. So I checked the contacts and cleaned them. Still a problem. I checked everything related to it but couldn't find the fault. So I began to pack up. When I was about to put the glass on, thought of touching anything that scores on the playfield. Bingo! One of the rollover 'stars' was stuck due to my playfield polishing. Cleaned it up and problem solved. I have 2 solid states - Nugent and Flash. Turned them on for the first time in nearly 4 years. Flash came with an error message - see pic. Can anyone tell me what it means? Might mean calling on @Skybeaux !

Next turned on Nugent. Powered up and seems to be working. IMG20190806162016.thumb.jpeg.19dc6026c3198e4862c5089ec37881c7.jpegIMG20190806162456.thumb.jpeg.4e3021a35cb7ef5018b8a8243e894e45.jpeg

Can anyone help with what error message 1486 1 on Flash is? On the credit/ball window it has 04 00.

486 is the game number

the batteries are flat

I do hope you took the batteries out of the game when you put it in storage.

quick temp fix is to flick to power off and back on quickly that should make it boot but long term the batteries will need replacing

Thanks to the advice from @Boots and @goodolddays I got Flash going. A few minor issues : player 2 display is shot (see pic 1) and the drop targets are slow to score when all down and then reset (pic 2).

During the third game the sound defaulted to tinny chime sounds. Fourth game it ended at ball 3 and next game ball 4. Anyhoo, great to have Flash back. IMG20190807143054.thumb.jpeg.5308856c165c75edc23c5d819012a3f5.jpegIMG_20190807_144624.thumb.jpeg.4cd230ca1686a1dbb208bb9da0642456.jpeg

I have not seen a Grand slam since I was 12 or so, Mid seventies . Would love to have that in my collection. Pioneer is another weak point. If only we could have them all. :rolleyes
When I've got the pins up and running I'm planning to have a mini meet. Will be a chance for EM lovers to play Grand Slam, Pioneer, Super Spin, High Hand, Jungle Princess, Aquarius, Riverboat (1964) and Pro Football along with Flash and Nugent.

Had some time today to do some fault finding. Super Spin- won't reset. Score motor keeps running when turned on. Jungle Princess - credit button not working and ball won't kick out to start play. Grand Slam - resets but goes immediately to tilt. High Hand - bonus stepper needs a clean. I worked on High Hand and cleaned the stepper unit. There are many guides and videos out there on this. What I did is similar to https://troxelrepair.com/2018/10/gottlieb-el-dorado-pinball-troubleshooting-and-cleaning-stepper-units/

Put it together and bonuses score perfectly.

My bits and pieces I use when cleaning, tools for doing minor repairs and spare parts for my pins have either been scattered around the room or in a plastic crate. I thought about getting one of those tool cabinets on wheels but even with Father's Day specials they were still pricey (call me cheap again) and overkill for what I need.

Mrs Bossninja saw this little beauty at the Reject Shop for $30. Will allow me to have the gear at hand when working on a machine then can roll it into a corner when finished. IMG20190822195929.thumb.jpeg.129d47d646d905866b5490e915fda2b5.jpeg

So, tonight I'm working on the 10s score reel on Super Spin but got side tracked. Decided to look in the original Gottleib envelope that I hadn't opened for close to 10 years. I had forgotten it had everything, including an unopened tube of original Gottlieb white lube, score cards, schematics, notices and installation procedures. Maybe this should be in the tech advice and repair thread, but I'll put it as part of my ongoing work experience in EM basics 101. I took the 10s score reel apart, cleaned it up and thought I put it back together right. When I reset to start play (and it was on zero), all goes well BUT during the game the 10s score OK, but do not carry over to the 100 when on 90.

Problem 2. When the 10s reel was on 20 at the end of a game, it would stop resetting to zero when it got to 50. See pic. Any advice? IMG_20190826_200900.thumb.jpeg.164ecac93f82487cb836ddbb19ccf184.jpeg

Sounds like the switch contacts aren't adjusted or you haven't put it back together exactly as it came apart. I had similar problems and fixed it by pulling it apart again and reassembling correctly. Is the scorereel plastic facing the correct way? I put a mark where the 9 was so I didn't stuff it up. Compare it to the 100s.

Manually engage the score reel and watch as it comes around to 9. It will force contact with at least one contact which will then engage the 100 coil at the bottom of cabinet. Ensure the contact on score reel is moving across ok and is cleaned

Worked on that troublesome score reel and it's now ticking nicely - with some adjustment of the bottom pair of switches, there is now no hang on 9. Reset nicely to 0. BUT the 9 carrying over to add to the 100s not happening. Will do some adjustment of contacts next.
