How to make Gold Pinballs at home.

Recommended Posts

I found this on Pinside & feel it's to good not to share.

If you want Gold or Copper colored pinballs then read on-

How to coat the steel (or chrome) in copper, looks cool and no clue how long its gonna last but its simple enough to do again anytime I want. basically its:

a) half cup of vinegar, teaspoon of salt, 1/4 teaspoon of sugar, heat em together in the microwave a minute.

b) put a dozen or so old ugly dull badly tarnished pennies into that soup for about 10 minutes, then remove em.

c) put the cleaned ball into the cup of soup until you get the color you like, then dry and wax it real good.

found I had to take it a little darker, waxing-polishing does brightens it up and removes a little of the thin plating. A thin coat of copper looks more goldish, a longer bath will go VERY coppery, but with playfield lighting it looks more goldish anyway. give it a try to a nice new clean cheep ball, because the plating will show every little flaw it has. Pre 1981 pennies really seem to work the best.

I'm sure using some old copper pipe would work too!

Put your wife's wedding ring in there instead of US pennies?

If you search youtube there's lots of videos on how to do DIY low voltage copper plating using a bit of sacrificial copper sheet or pipe.

You think this method could be done to wire ramps ? Would shine be ok ? Or maybe a quick clear coat?

Indy and Tom wire ramps ect

Brass is a alloy of copper and Zinc

Brass was a failure, the brass fittings started to go pink (dezincafiaction).

the end result was,the balls appeared almost black, but most of it wiped off.
