First time fun flip frenzy for a cause

Recently a young guy who used to work for me took his own life, which affected me pretty heavily as you would expect. His family are raising money and running the gold coast half marathon in his honour and to raise awareness.

I had an idea of hosting a flip frenzy for mainly beginners for a real fun way to contribute. Thinking I would run it with my mate and we could give tips instead of playing.

We would have 8 machines for sure and probably a ninth with a ten a possibility.

No Fear

Batman Forever

Batman (data east)

Demolition Man

Ripley's

Fishtales

Pirates (stern)

Sharkey's Shootout

Lost in Space (no. 9)

Dirty Harry (possible no. 10)

The idea of beginners is my wife doesn't like playing me because of the shame factor but a whole group of beginners would be a lot of fun for a good cause.

My main question is what is an ideal number of people for this many machines?

Also the easist format to run. For example, winner moves on or two losses moves you on. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks Dave

Kudos to you for holding such an event.

Great format for this type of event as people get to play continuously.

I THINK its 2.5 people per machine originally.

I helped @chopchop with a couple of FlipFrenzys with his work colleagues.

What I did find with social, they needed to play more before they were rested. So, people were catching up and then had to constantly get called. Then there were the super competitive who wanted to win. So you definitely do get a mix.

With 8 machines I reckon 22-26. This gives a bit of socialising and the ability for you guys to get organised. It does get frantic.

Hope someone else chimes in

Cheers

Great idea, but what do you class as a beginner?

Someone new to pinball?

Someone not in the top 100? (Australian)

Someone who sucks all the time?

Either way I hope that all goes well with this as all the little things add up to help people move on in these sad situations.

I look forward to more information as it becomes available.

Maybe your wife could invite a heap of Girls and have a girl vs guy set up?

Weird I know, but just throwing out another idea.

I'm sure this venture will be a success no matter which format you choose...

Great idea. As Acejas said I’ve run these comps for first timers many times. It works well even when people have never flipped before. If you have 8 machines, easily can cater for 24 people. That’s gives 8 in the queue so time for rest, but usual waiting time is around 5 mins before you’re up again. Use the latest software in matchplay.events - very easy. People also like a defined time - you can run for 2 or 3 hours with defined start and finish times. Biggest things I found were newbies had no idea how to put up a 2 player game and often ended up with 4 player games-watch out for this. They also play each other’s balls often. Good idea to have 2 of you not playing - one to enter scores and one to wander around and help. If you need any help with the set up I’m happy to give you a hand.
