Local councils suck.

I was making some very low early inquires with the North Grampians shire about a tourism idea I had about opening my game-room to tourists as a Vintage pinball Play & Display center. Now our town is totally stuffed, No Pub, No General store, No Fuel, No post office I mean we have NOTHING open except a farm produce outlet & a welding work shop. So all the traffic just drive straight through.

 

Now the councils planning departments response to my embryonic idea-

 

1/ if the machines takes a token or a coin then NO permit is possible because my property is in FARMING DISTRICT.

(How does that make a difference, I don't have any neighbours.)

 

2/ If a permit was to even be considered, I'd have to build a Unisex toilet block & fully cater to the handicapped for both game-room & toilets. They even expect the machines to be set at a height for wheel chairs or gopher height.

 

At this point I pulled the plug on the conversation as clearly the North Grampians Shire has no idea how to get a new business no matter how small in to the local area.

 

Idea dropped as it's pointless. :realmad:

What did you honestly expect in the People's Socialist State of Victoria?.

 

Here's an idea. Not sure how it will go in the land of WOK but a rifle range. See shooting is in fact the number one sport of the handicapped and caters for both sexes or even those that don't know what sex they are or want to be.:blink:

 

I found this interesting fact out when submitting a price for an autodoor installation in a gun shop. It had to have a ramp going in beside the normal couple of steps to a landing and in the doors. The couple of steps is because all gun shops have to be a half meter above the ground height to prevent ram raids but the ramp is so handicaps can enter the store in wheel chairs.

 

The gun shop owner said they have massive numbers of handicapped coming into the store and it was he that mentioned shooting being the number one sport of the handicapped.

 

You may need to mix it up a bit in the PSSOV like maybe a couple of windmills with a target on each of the blades?

 

A couple of signs around the place like Stop Adarni or Vegans only behind the firing range so they don't feel excluded. It may make the vegans feel a little special being the only group allowed into this area.

 

And the all important toilet signage.....

I think you should do it anyway. Invite all of the town's locals to an opening weekend free play event and get them onside. At the same invite some press along and get a couple of news stories about how cool it is written online and in the local paper. When the council try to shut you down because you won't cut the legs in half, go back to the press and your fellow town's folk and ask them to help you fight it.

I have found when it comes to local councils, you need run at election time to be voted in, then you can do what you want, your council buddies will agree more often and even overlook the illegal activities you partake in.

Then when the heat comes your way, you just resign and disappear, the lynch mob will forget what you even did, :rolleyes.

80% of the folk around here have never seen a pinball machine & the church goers here already think their a gambling machine. It's too hard & for the reward after insurance, taxes & repairs the reward would not be worth the red tape, I've already lost interest.

That's sad, but understandable. How far is your local pub. You could try to strike up a deal with them to put a few games out there. Worst case it's a place to store some of your pins. Best case you start making real money and buying more with the proceeds.

Iv'e tried that twice one pub had a big fire & I almost lost the pin & the other went broke & I had to fight the administrator to get all my machines back. Not going there again.

Yep, both really bad scenarios. Sounds like you have come to the right conclusion.

They would think Ping Pong was a Chinese take away meal from the next town. :lol

Or build a 'cafe' then when it all simmers down, add the pins later. Takes focus off the pinball only motivation

...and then you need extra insurance

Bit late now but if you applied as a developer and made a donation to the mayor's re election bid you'd be a shoo in or if complete despair wears you down you can come to QLD where local councils will happily work with DEVELOPERS just remember the donation unfortunatlly this is not a joke or fiction

As a business it would never make enough to cover the expense of building a tourism rest room & all the handicap modifications, it would put me in the red for a decade or more. I'd be dead of old age before I got a dollar of pure profit, it was a stupid idea from the start.

the more i think about it, the council did you a favor

trying to comply with insurance demands would have been harder. lock away any chemicals, lock away any farm equipment, make sure they tourist cannot cut themselves on anything

 

test and tag all your games every 6 months

The inconsistency between local councils astounds me. There's a local cafe here (WA) that managed to get a licence even though it doesn't have a toilet, but you need one for a pinball place?!?

It's not just councils that suck...It's the world.

Did you know I can visit anyone that I don't know in a nursing home, sit with them chat, read a book blah blah blah.

But if you do work there as a contractor even if you have been there for 15 years that you need a police check?

I am a regular nut not some random nut off the street. Everything has changed so much. A bus stop is now worth some $250,000.00 plus bucks.

What ever happened to a piece of yellow wood with bus stop sprayed on it in black. It's probably behind the local toilet for 3 people with poor eyesight and no sexual preference but pleasing themselves.

My wife works in a nursing home & yes she has the police check every couple of years, Volunteers also need a police check too, but visitors don't. If your a volunteer maybe you've slipped notice.

Great idea, but the two churches in town got sold a few years back & people live in them. The town is doooomed. :077:

Ah bugger. Sounds like these country towns need to get together and put on an event annually. The councils sound like a bunch of muppets.

The council thinks if they ignore us long enough the town will just blow away one day. Problem gone!

In fairness the council does mail out the rates notices every year on time, but that's all we get.
