LAI SEGA OutRun Restoration

Masked up the black today and painted the red cab sides. Glad to see there was no overspray onto the black.

Masking took ages, one learning point would be to keep the t moulding in place I think. The tape would of stick on much better to t moulding than the rough edge of the cab.

Here's the pics. I've minimised paint by not spraying all of the area covered by side art. (since posting this I've now painted the whole red area to make sure the adhesion will be good)

I think the red is a good match to the original as far as I can tell. I used Poppy Red Silk Rustoleum can paint.

Hopefully next weekend I'll convince my wife to bring it into the house and get the side art and front art on.

I didn't get the bring the cab in to the house as planned this weekend as we have visitors staying over so the side art will wait for a few weeks.

In the meantime I've started to do more assembly on the control mech area. More cleaning and the CP base has been installed. I cleaned all of the Teflon wheels that allow for the smooth left to right motion of the CP. The CP is very heavy!!

I've installed the shaker motor and greased the moving areas.

Layers of the wooden base were peeling off so I glued a fair bit of it and then painted it black.

It's come a long way since picking it up 11 months back.

LAI SEGA OutRun Restoration

Last weekend my wife kindly helped my take the cabinet for a ride from the garage to the house. It wasn't an easy process as it had to go along the road (where several cars passed us) and down a second driveway at around a 40 deg drop. Then it had to go down and up a few stairs. It was kinda scary and I had a feeling that we would all end up in a heap at the bottom of the house.

I'm happy to say we all survived !

The cab is now in the house and my wife couldn't be happier .....mmmm #arcadewife

I lined up the side art and found it needed trimming around the top curves. I taped it down to the cab and used a specially crafted piece of Lego taped to a pencil to mark a 6mm line around the edges and then trimmed it.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160815/6a6d84b955ce5e9db0f1886ec695c974.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160815/8cd8d4ea97acec87862766b720aa6c24.jpg

While the cab was on its side I as also knocked in two T nuts for the accelerator and assembled it....shiny and new! I will mallet the newly acquired t-moulding from Games Masters this week too.

Some small updates on the CP too, I've ordered the gear lever brackets from Arcade Fix It in the US, all it needs then is the silver surround.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160815/b7b2b7d9c72313dc53972ebbf7ccfc60.jpg

Added the front and rear access panels, applied the front decals and also the freshly painted speaker grilles and added the speakers. That's all for this weekend. I plan to get the control panel on and brackets painted over the next two weeks.

Hi Outrun 86,

Great work. You are lucky and obviously have a great understanding wife. As I do. (see pic in our living room) Not everyone would tolerate an arcade cab in the living room. Enjoying your thread.

cheers Ray

Yes, she's a good one. It will be heading in to the spare room with the cocktail cab soon.

I have a question around the monitor fixings. I noticed on your machine the fixings were different and I know you replaced the monitor but I was unsure if my can was missing something in this area after them installing a bigger screen.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160827/13e2e85e6051ea9aca94e8a21fc3bad4.jpg

Mine just has 2 wooden batons (which I think the silver monitor bezel sits on and an angled shelf( which I think the monitor would sit on. The angle of the shelf is not parallel to the batons though and I can see nail holes behind the baton.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160827/fb3af36d9ce5eccc15f7182d0bb76f7d.jpg

Can you recall what yours was like for the monitor?

Thanks.

No plans to sell sorry. It has never even been in my home! Bought it ages ago (must be a 1-2 years now) from Savage on here and took it up to my sisters place a few streets away. I didn't have the space at the time, and still don't! My brother-in-law is also into the hobby as you can see from the photo, so he was happy to look after it!

I would really like to get it home so I will have to sell something to make some space for it!

Thanks for the photos @oldbyte , mine only has a shelf , no glass / Perspex either. I think the shelf must of been used to just screw the chassis on. I don't have any other mountings for the screen so I think I will have to wait until I get the screen bezels to work out how to install the monitor. Did you make the wooden surrounds for your screen?

Thanks.

Here's the latest update - I've temporary fitted the NOS monitor, it's a 19" 1992 WG.

The marquee brackets and CP brackets have been sanded, enamelled and fitted.

I'm going to look in to changing the current marquee tube for a LED set up. If anyone knows how to do this or can direct me to the parts needed it would be a great help.

I'm going to work on the pedal assembly next and strip it down for restore. The brake pedal will get chromed and I've got a new spring for the accelerator pedal so it should operate like new.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160905/0e0aafdc5f7f913c9d7452d91bd10ed1.jpg

I'm not sure where the time has gone but I've continued to work on the machine for an hour or so most weeks. I've fitted a new marquee light using LEDs and rigged it to the Power box.

I've also been cleaning Wire harnesses or replacing damaged ones.

LAI SEGA OutRun Restoration

Big progress in the last few weeks on the OutRun restore.

All wire harnesses are now in place, mechanical parts greased and it's finally been turned on to test!!

To say I was happy to see a picture after 13 months of restoration would be an understatement. I think I may of dropped a few F-bombs!!

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161029/ddf314475786110b2c9c7c48a718706f.jpg

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161029/dc1fd86176af93066853444761164b74.jpg

So we have a picture but no sound at all which is a big part of OutRun to not have working.

I checked the SEGA Amp and that was getting a voltage of 16v, wiring seemed fine and finally I found it to be just both speakers are shot. Nothing to sinister. I'll get these ordered in the next week or so.

Im waiting on the pedals and coin mech back fixing plate to come back from chroming. 2 new coin mechs have arrived from the US as the old ones were scratched up and not worth repairing.

I also cleaned up the service switch panel and added a new pot and vol cap.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161029/8235e9dcdd907d2d2df495f8ecb747e0.jpg

Finally the screen and dash bezel will be coming from the UK early next year if all goes to plan.

Your attention to detail is amazing. I wish I had this much patience. Job well done. You should have bought mine at half the price:lol

Thank you and you are so right about yours. Would of been cheaper and no work what so ever. Although I've at least learnt a lot from stripping this down. Every single part has been removed, re painted, cleaned or replaced.
