17/21 Inch COCKTAIL CABINET PLANS

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys, it's been a hard slog as I've had to learn how to configure Mala from scratch (was using glauncher with DOS mame on win98), I gotta say Mala is an awesome frontend for this setup with plenty of quality skins.

Well I'm off back to the garage to test a few games out.

is that t-moulding on the ends? it looks like part of the wood :P

If you mean the control panels sides, there's no T-Moulding it's just painted in enamel.

Here are some shots of the completed cab up and running.

The entire cab from start to finish has been completed in 7 days with all work done myself (best way to save a dollar is to learn how to D.I.Y.)

I'm using Mala for the frontend and running Command Line Version of MAME 0.122

XP for the operating system and Keywiz Encoder for the Joystcks and Buttons To save space I use 16 core shielded data cable for wiring each control panel to the Keywiz.

yea thats where i was talking. So is there any t-moulding on it at all?

No T-Moulding at all. Control panel edges were sanded, sealed with PVA glue sanded, painted, sanded etc etc Repeated thin wet coats get the best results takes about ten light coats with sanding with 600 grit in between then one last wet coat left to bake in the sun. You're left with a hard wearing baked enamel control panel with a good gloss that polishes well. You gotta find the right paint but, it makes all the difference. (preparation is also 90% of the job)

If anyone's motivated enough to get a start on one of these cabs this weekend then pls lets see ur progress shots. As stated before get your monitor sorted first.

  • 5 years later...

So it's been about 4 years since I posted on here and about 6 years since I built one of these cocktail cabinets.

I had an old woodgrain laminate desk laying around so I thought I'd knock another one up out of the wood for something to do.

I had thrown all my old templates away so I have had to do everything from scratch.

It's getting hard to source 21" PC monitors these days so I decided to use a 51cm TV (which are also getting scarce but very cheap if you can find them).

Will be using a PC running MAME 0.122 with a video converter to change the VGA signal to AV to suit the TV (really don't want to run an LCD screen).

The frontend will be Mala and will use a Keywiz for the encoder.

I'm open to suggestions on how to set it up better as lots of things have probably changed over the last few years.

Currently I'm just going to set it up the way I used to which worked fine.

Here's some pics of where I'm currently at.

  • 10 months later...

Someone asked if I could build them one of these cabs for their kids.

I started last Sunday (4th Jan) with a visit to Bunnings to get the wood and by that night I had the cab completed.

The 19" LCD is mounted directly to the top of the desktop PC, the monitor bezel sits 3mm below to bottom of the lid(worked out perfectly by chance).

Nine days later and it's all complete and tested(running Mame0.122 with Mala frontend).

Just waiting on the toughened glass top which will be another week away, the legs are being done at work and should be ready by Friday.

The budget was $500 and the build has come in at $470 for everything.

It's nice and light on HD space at 18 gig.

Also I've used this setup for years in this application (being sold to a mother for her two kids) and it allows you to have a split cocktail view so you can play Street Fighter style games from both sides.

It's simple and works, just like Mala.

  • Administrators

Wow you work fast Kaizen!

How have you setup Mala navigation? Interested as I need to upgrade/restore my cocktail and I hate the current inherited nav setup in the exiting Mala install.

Cheers,

Brad

A couple of hours each day gets it done, also I've built a lot of these cabs over the years so there's no planning needed, just make it up as per the plans.

This build was nice and easy as I didn't have to stuff around with CRT screens etc.
