Restore Yellowed Plastic

Recommended Posts

Thanks Travis I've just been waiting for ages for someone here to try it. Just ordered two bottles not just for arcade but the kitchen kenwood mixer has the yellowing on a couple of the parts like the speed dial and top cover . The astro city ii coin slot and speaker surround are on the hit list too :) mikie

After 2 coats on the A590 case, it has come up very well

After 2 coats, the badly discoloured Super Famicom is coming along nicely. Still needs to come down a shade or 2 of grey, maybe another 2 coats will just about do it. See in the photo below, I haven't done the inside of the console which shows how it originally was compared to the outside.

After 2 more coats on the Super Famicom it has gotten a bit lighter, but not as dramatic as the first 2 coats. It is reasonably close to the original grey, probably can't get much lighter. Certainly looks much better than before, although compared top a non discoloured SNES you could tell the difference.

The bad news is that this afternoon the wind suddenly picked up, blew the top shell off my deck and smashed half the rear grill part into smithereens :redface. Lesson learned: secure whatever you are leaving outside!

I have some parts SNES consoles, I think I can salvage one of the top shells and use it to replace the broken shell. Lucky it was only my "spare" Super Famicom.

OK. I decided to give this whole biso a go.

I opted for the easy single bottle of creme peroxide solution.

I used a black light I have had for ages. Not sure if it is actually UV light but decided to give it a go

I created my retrobright chamber of light (cardboard box and al foil) and got cracking.

Results are ok for the first application. Will try it a few more times. I did not wrap it in gladwrap as it was done in the garage overnight so I did not think the solution would evaporate. Will give it another tonight and see

OK. Second application of retr0bright. This time it cleaned up a lot of the yellow swiggles I could see on the plastic. Still a bit yellow but compared to what I started with its pretty good.

I decided to wrap the plastics in gladwrap this time and also left the main garage neon lights on as well to give a but move UV.

Next time we have a sunny day i will try this outside with natural UV.

Here is the original console again before the treatment

Also Frank i just applied it directly over the top of any stickers. I drowned the console in it just to be sure. Nothing has happened to any of the labels.

Great stuff there MJ, good news about the sticker too.

I reckon one more coat with it left in the full sun (when the weather permits) will get it looking good as new. Finish it off with some plastic polisher and some elbow grease and it will look fantastic.

Ok

just finished the third round. Still has a slight ting of yellow but over all I am super happy with the results. Compared to what it was this now looks cool. The base has come up near perfect white now. I am sure with another two or three applications it would be perfect. i am just running out of that cream peroxide stuff now. Think the next batch i make up from scratch so I have tons of it.

For ease of use the ready made stuff is pretty good.

Ok back again. This time the good old Amiga 500 gets the treatment. I managed to get some industrial stuff from a friend of mine.

I just painted it on and left it in the sun for like 3 hours. I am pretty happy with the results so far. Another session or two and this thing should be near perfect.

This is before the treatment

Depends on a few things. I've found that straight peroxide cream with no other ingredients is the most gentle method, it does take a little longer to whiten things though. Also depends on how long you leave it applied, most things are safe within a 4-6 hour time frame but I'd be worried about sticker/decal/colour damage any longer than that.

Sorry for all the questions, but I have some more!

- I should have clarified, I meant "clear" pinball plastics that have yellowed. Is this OK?

- Some of the eBay listings state you need to use a powder bleach with the cream, is that required or do I only need the cream?

- Is there anywhere in Australia that sells this, or do I have to buy from the UK?

Cheers,

Matthew
