MGLXLII - Arcade Shooter - RULES

Recommended Posts

Hi Gamers,

Welcome to arcade gaming competition with MGLXLII. This tournament is the 4th and final quarter of the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OF ESPORTS for 2019. All gamers worldwide are welcome to game. You can join in at any time.

Please watch the Trailer below for the official tournament launch with important competition details ...

Competition:

The gamer with the most points in this tournament will be the MGLXLII champion. There will be 9 games played over 8 weeks, competing world wide on the most challenging and toughest video games of all time. 2 games will be released at the start, then 1 game each week, with the final 2 games released at the same time for the finale. Games are only open for 17 days each, so gamers must play their best in that time and post their scores before the game is closed. At the end of each MGL, points will be accumulated for each gamer toward the World Championship of eSports Scoreboard. The highest score after the four MGLs are completed will be the undisputed World Champion of eSports for 2019.

Prizes:

Every gamer that plays all of the games has the chance to win the mystery prize. So if there are 9 games and you play and submit for all 9, then if you are drawn from the pool of qualifiers, then you will win all of the prizes. Whether you finish in the top half or the lower half in the tournament, you still have a chance to win. Prizes will be cash and/or arcade memorabilia. In MGLXLII, the mystery prize will be 6 x mystery prizes.

Point system:

The incremental point system will be used for each game. 1st place will earn 100 points, 2nd place 99 points, 3rd place 98 points and so on. All gamers will earn competition points for their scores. If there is a tie on the overall scoreboard, then a head to head game win count will be used to determine the final placings. For example, if two players tie for 18th place in the world, then whoever has scored higher per game on a head to head basis will earn 18th place and the other gamer will earn 19th place. If there is a tie also on head to head game count, the gamer who has the highest accumulated game score points will be the winner.

Games:

Games are nominated by the competitors and sent by PM to the Gamemaster. Games must be selected from 1976 to 1990 and no trackball or steering wheel games are to be nominated. The number of games that can be nominated by each competitor in MGLXLII is in the trailer. The games to be played in the competition will be randomly drawn from the pool of nominations. Only unique games will be in the pool, as duplications of nominations will not be placed in the pool. The order of game play will be determined by the Gamemaster and each game will be released weekly for competition.

If you would like to nominate games and have a say in what is played, please send them by private message (PM) to OOO by midnight Sydney time on Wednesday 27-Nov-19. The number of games you can nominate is in the trailer. The first two games will commence on Friday 29-Nov-19.

The following games are excluded from MGLXLII and cannot be nominated: 10 Yard Fight, Alien Syndrome, Arabian, Black Tiger, Bosconian, Bubbles, Changes, Dommy, Elevator Action, Exerion, Gravitar, Joust 2, Jungler, Magic Sword, Mr Do!, Mr Do!’s Wild Ride, Mr. TNT, Ms Pacman, New Rally-X, Pac-Land, Popeye, Q*bert, R-Type, Sky Kid, Space Fury, Space Invaders, Space Zap, Star Force, Super Pac-man, Raiden, Swimmer, Tetris, Time Pilot, The Pit, Wardner and Zaxxon.

Settings:

The game settings will be posted in each game thread and gamers must ensure they compete on these settings only. No continues are allowed when submitting a score and must be played from the beginning of the game. No pausing allowed. No auto fire allowed. No stitching of inp files from save states. No cheats allowed.

The WolfMAME version 0.106 is highly recommended, however any later version can be used. Only the version 0.106 ROM set will be posted for each game and the equivalent for other MAME versions can be used.

Games can be played at the arcade. You must ensure the arcade operator has the game at the MGL game settings for the submission to be valid.

Submissions:

Gamers are to post a screenshot/photo showing their score with initials in the game thread. Games are only open for 17 days and any score submissions made after the game is closed by the Gamemaster will not be accepted. Scores at aussiearcade.com will be combined with scores from twingalaxies.com to form the world championship scoreboard.

Gamers:

Professional and casual gamers can play all or just some of the games. Gamers do not need to nominate games to play, they can play any game during the tournament. Streaming games and posting/sharing tips are encouraged, as is friendly banter in the gaming community. Striving for PBs, learning and playing the best you can are all highly encouraged. As all members at AA are registered, there is no additional registration process for the championships.

Good gaming and good luck to all competitors.

haha the dude inside the zookeeper, its that time again.

Spot on. I was in Tokyo for a week in October last year. I checked out the arcades and this gamer on the music machine played like a legend. I was so impressed with his skill and high energy, I took a vid of his incredible gaming ability. Amazing. And his super fast game play in the MGL trailer was not sped up. He played that fast real time!

Great intro video OOO. A bit of nostalgia on how the original Bartronica looked like before renovations.

I figured @Pessimeister and yourself would remember how Bartronica in Melbourne used to look. The MGL trailer snaps a record of the "then" existence and style of the arcade.

For the historical records, like in the movie Galaxy Quest ... :lol

Fantastic video; very entertaining stuff. Much like last year when you used footage from Pixel Alley to great effect - this is no different. The Zookeeper synchronicity was really fun!

The Arcadinator and I were just talking about the MGL on friday night just gone at Bartronica actually - we knew that the final quarter wasn't too far away. And now here it is...

Bartronica has definitely gone through a variety of changes - I certainly miss the ol' blackboard scoreboard! :) Just off shot in your video actually was my old 1942 score (307 k or something). I remember Aaron put it on some black tape so he could remove it. This was before the era of NIJ. :D Phil Day still had the Galaga score - must have been after he beat this dude Cain. This was also before the era of NIJ.

The launch of Bartronica 2.0 added some slightly claustrophobic elements and more end space for more consoles but alas, a new scoreboard has yet to emerge.

Oh well...maybe over the summer the Arcadinator and this other local dude Jeremy (who is very good at Snow Bros) can have a double-header on Twitch to get some more momentum going there.

Well...better get my noms in. Bring on the new MGL, bring on the summer! :)

I managed to check my bag of tricks and guess what I found? Your memory is excellent. Yes there is your 1942 score, and the tape.

A moment in time this is, one from the past. If you know, tell us about the other gamers on the scoreboard. And what are the latest 1942, Galaga and Donkey Kong high scores?

Ahh, nice one! Yes, that's probably the last batch of scores that were up before the renovations.

Nowadays, NIJ has both Galaga and 1942 well and truly under his belt. In fact, he went higher than ever before last friday night on 1942 - scoring a stunning 11797400 with the additional bonus of completing the game. I had to check my records, but sure enough, it's a PB. :)

Galaga is up to 508, 900 which the Arcadinator got just after the Gala-Gala event. Players can read more about these scores (including a history of the 1942 score at Bartronica) in my thread here: https://www.aussiearcade.com/showthread.php/94123-Score-Watch-Melbourne-Barcade-high-scores-(Bartronica-amp-Pixel-Alley)

As for the other scores, many players will know of Jackson Smith's World Record on Point Blank. Johnny Bonde's killscreen score on Donkey Kong is also the stuff of legends for that machine. I think there's a nice photo of Johnny looking pretty chuffed standing in front of that scoreboard somewhere.

I can't confirm Aaron on Ice Cold Beer is Josh's brother (and co-owner) but that's a good possibility. Not sure on Ghostbusters either though I know that machine is still working well and is situated to the right of the main bar.

Nigel and I are constantly discussing whether Alex' Speed Race record is legitimate. Whilst he can have flawless runs and score in excess of around 3600, my PB on that great little game is still only at around 3200. The game has its quirks though, so perhaps Alex' mark is for real.

I knew I'd seen this plane somewhere before

This is something my dad made year ago, which is something pretty simple for his woodworking skill set

And some of his more complex projects (cause I like showing them off), these were made from plans, not kits - so all pieces were individually made. I unfortunately didn't inherit his woodworking skills, mainly the patience side of things required to make this sort of stuff.

Wow that’s some awesome skill and fine art works. This isn’t April 1st right?

Can your dad make a P38 Lightning and we can award this as a prize to one lucky gamer who played 1942 in this MGL? I’ll pay for the work. Maybe also Mr Do! and Pengo.

Sadly no, he passed away last Dec :( He actually didn't do much woodwork in the last 3 years due to failing eyesight.

Sad to hear that. Wonderful works he made as mementos.

Yeah, he was very skilled. Happy to donate the fighter plane as a trophy/random prize though for this MGL. I can pack and send if it's going to someone in Australia, or send it to you if the prize goes to someone O/S.

That's very generous of you, however considering how important they are now, maybe keeping them in the family is the best way to go.
