progress! I went to see my graphics guy today and got a paper template of the cardboard bezel for me to muck about with. Good news is that he thinks we can do the bezel as a two piece. The only thing I need to find out now is the weight/ thickness of the card so we can try and match it. This of course might mean we have to go back to a four piece bezel but we'll see.

So I'll put this together and see how it looks and also compare it to the measurements I got from Dez.

Also I'm going to finally get started on the artwork for the panels next week. I think I'm going to go with the art work that Dez provided me and keep it local :) Once that's done I'll finally be able to start putting the thing back together yay.

Any progress on this project is awesome news for me. If anyone has any clues about card thickness it would be most appreciated

ok really good news I cut up the surround and checked it against Dezbaz's dimensions and happily they are exactly the same :) Like within 0.25 - 0.5mm. Hot damn so we now have a decent template. The corners on the tabs are going to need a few tweaks here and there as some were missing from the original tracing and we just made them up a bit.

wee bit more progress on this. I cut a copy on the template on 1mm cardstock and stuck it together. It came out really nicely....but I've never seen one of these in the flesh before I don't know what I'm looking at :)

It's a lot deeper than what I thought it would look like but checking some reference pics I see that this surround goes almost all the way back to the monitor mounts so I guess it make sense.

I've also gotten a quote back from my graphics guy. He is outsourcing the cutting to a colleague of his who has a really good cutting machine called a zund I think. It's not cheap to go this way but it means the surround will have really good fold lines and be cut nicely. He reckons it would be cheaper than get a couple of dies cut. So he can do a minimum run of 5 and they are going to cost in the region of NZ$250 which is like US$180.

I don't imagine it will cost much for shipping but what does everyone think? Is this a prohibitively high cost? Getting a couple of dies cut would be about NZ$500....might be cheaper if there was enough interest.

Hi mate,

Great job by the way!!

Is that NZ$250 each or for 5?

Is that fully complete (black with silver stripes) or just blank white card stock, cut and fitted?

Hey Jango thanks man! Yeah unfortunately that's a per unit price but it is complete with black and chrome stripes, all the fold lines and 3m double sided tape to stick it together. The digital cutter is a bit like a cnc router I think. I'm leaning more towards getting a die cut and going that way. It just means if I pay $500 for a die and only cut one or two it's going to be a bloody expensive piece of cardboard for me! But a run of 10 surrounds at NZ$60 or NZ$70 each would get that price down and mean I could break even.

What do you reckon?

Wow, that is one big number

Great effort on the job though

My thoughts are, just get guys to hand cut

Good luck deciding

I know right the thing looks huge! I might double check against my cockpit. It should be roughly 600mm wide which is the inside width of the cockpit.

My guy reckoned hand cutting would mean poor fold lines rather than grooves. I don't know enough about this sort of stuff to know better but maybe I'll get another opinion.

Ok thanks Dez I'll post results next week

$500 is allot of coin, Id cut by hand, fold using a straight edge, bone folder you will get good folds, or if its really thick you could score the card

youtube it and watch the little old lady's show you how they do it. for their craft stuff.

nice one thanks Jason1 will do! Yeah it's a bit of cash I'll do more research before I commit to anything.

I've started an interest list over on KLOV to get an idea of numbers:

I figured you have done way harder stuff on your resto so far you wouldnt have to much trouble doing a little bit of craft lol.

On a serious note, the resto is looking good champ.

keep up the good work

Ha ha yeah that's a good point! Yeah you've got me thinking now I might be able to get a decent tool for getting fold lines. On the test surround I ended up scoring on both sides as it's 1mm thick. My graphics guy might have something that makes creating this line easy......ok more questions on Monday :)

Thanks for the compliment about the resto. I've just booked in the panels to get the artwork done hopefully next week. That'll speed things up a bit!

I pulled the panels out to have a look yesterday. Overall I think they'll do the job there's still a bit of unevenness here and there but I kind of like that you can tell that their original panels!

sooooo pretty much have had to abandon the cardboard bezel project until I can find a cheaper way to make them. The cost of digital cutting was too high even with a 'bulk' order and my graphics guy reckons hand cutting is too rough and die cutting is problematic as finding a cutter big enough in NZ is hard......sigh.... oh well I'll come back to it when I really NEED a surround

Anyone who wants the template please PM if you want to have a crack at it

My friend is scratch building a cockpit version and had these pics on his FB page. Not sure if they are any use to you. I've ask what his plans are for making / replicating this part.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160819/013c4b53f6294846192b2488ad7f544f.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160819/a437e2ac2e288d9f36834addce6bdbe4.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160819/639cd944ebb7a071945c4daa1698281d.jpg

Bugger! On the bright side, I hear Rich from TOG is planning to do these. I just hope I live long enough to get one!

wow outrun they look really nice! Yes please ask him where he's going with it. The only thing that jumps out at me on his one it looks like it's missing the front tabs? My graphics guy wanted to get the templates cut first before laying on the vinyl it wouldn't crack/ tear when being folded and given that money would be changing hands I agreed that it needed to be done properly so people don't end up with a delaminating surround.

someone will sort this bugger out eventually :)

okay had a good day today with the cockpit. I went and picked up the completed sideart on my restored panels. The finish on these bad boys is frickin' amazing. They used a UV protective laminate over the top to preserve the artwork and make it a bit scratch resistant. They reckon it would last a good 5 years in the sun before you started noticing any fading so I'm well pleased.

http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a549/jhonpog/Atai%20cockpit%20resto/20160909_111450%20640x337_zpsrdggbtom.jpg

The colour and sharpness of the art is fantastic I'll put my old art up against it to compare but it totally works. The art is high gloss so it pings a bit more than the older stuff and is making me consider changing the gloss level of the rest of the cabinet to match. Not sure yet it's just something I'm thinking about.

http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a549/jhonpog/Atai%20cockpit%20resto/20160909_120740%20640x323_zpsncdevnlh.jpg

Overall the artwork sits really well on the old panels. There does appear to be a slight mismatch in the panel and the art and they've done the best job they can with what they had. If you look at back of the bigger panels you'll see it's bit close to the edge.

http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a549/jhonpog/Atai%20cockpit%20resto/20160909_120751%20640x360_zpsngffg62f.jpg

To my eye the art is about 7mm to far back from the front edge but to be honest I can't tell how much the panels have swelled and moved over the years so I have no idea if this panel is anything like a factory fresh one. It never occurred to me that wood would swell outwards in all directions until I put the two panels together and saw how different they were.

But that aside I'm very happy with the work and price. For a restore of some pretty buggered panels I reckon they've come up not too bad. So I will finally be able to reattach them to the trolley and it might even start looking like an arcade game soon!

If anyone has any recommendations for a good glue for reassembly please let me know

Wow. Awesome. [emoji2]

Cheers Dezbaz! It's been a bit of a haul getting to this stage but I reckon things should go easier for the next wee bit before I get to the running gear. I kind of forgot I had them when I got up this morning so got another buzz when I saw them :)

oh well stay tuned for more pics when I finally put this together!
