  1. My Nanna used to watch WOF. She's over 80 now, and (surprisingly!!) doesn't go out to play pinball. End of story IMO

  3. matt, download visual pinball and then grab a stack of tables - there's a thread on this. it's the easiest way to test pins out unless you live near a dealer if you like a pinny in Visual pinball, you'll love the real thing

    Win XP problems

I read that as part of the installation of WinXP I could select to format the drive as part of the install - so all I've been trying to do is get the installer to work for me, but all it does is hang before any options come up at all .. so I'm not even getting to the point where I can choose to full install or repair install Is it wise or unwise to just format the HDD, and then on the restart through the boot sequence option make it boot from the WinXP CD? Or will that not work? About updating BIOS - to be honest I don't know how to, nor do I know where to get the latest BIOS from anyways (Dell Dimension 5150) - though from what I've read, playing with BIOS makes me nervous about junking this motherboard if I get it wrong Savage - yeah I tried system restore, no good :(

    Win XP problems

Diagnostic gives the HDD the all clear :) Unfortunately reinstalling XP is not proving easy. The install is hanging when it tries to load windows - and the M$ site gives the following advice The following items can cause Setup to stop responding while the "Setup is starting Windows" message is displayed: • An incorrect mass-storage device (such as a SCSI or IDE controller) driver is being loaded, or the driver was not written for Windows and is not compatible. Contact the device's manufacturer or download the latest driver for the mass-storage device. I have done this- updated the drivers - hasn't helped • There is a device connected to your mass-storage device that is preventing Windows from being installed. Remove any devices (such as scanners, tape drives, removable drives, and so on) from the mass-storage device controller. If the computer is IDE-based, verify that you have the master and slave designations set properly. If the mass-storage controller is SCSI-based, verify that the termination and bus speed is set properly. Don't have any mass storage devices connected • The computer does not have the latest BIOS revision. Contact the computer's manufacturer or check the manufacturer's Web site. Many manufacturers have updated their BIOS revisions to properly support Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI). I haven't tried making any changes to BIOS, and I'm not keen on doing it. The PC is only 14 months old and has run XP the whole time - so it already should be fine to support ACPI? • An ACPI Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) is being used during Setup. Force the use of a non-ACPI HAL during Setup. For additional information about this procedure, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 216251 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216251/EN-US/) How to Specify a Specific or Third-Party HAL During Setup So it leaves me here - HAL - the link leads to this page SUMMARY This article describes how to specify a specific or third-party hardware abstraction layer (HAL) during Windows Setup. Selecting a specific or third-party HAL during Setup should be necessary only if you have a HAL provided by a third party, or if Windows Setup does not detect your hardware correctly. Note This procedure works only when installing from a CD-ROM. When installing from setup boot floppies, a problem in the installation program prevents the installation of a third-party HAL. Selecting a HAL During Setup 1. During the first phase of Setup, at the Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration screen, press the F5 key. 2. Select the appropriate HAL, or Select Other to specify a third-party HAL. The available HALs include: • ACPI Multiprocessor PC • ACPI Uniprocessor PC • Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC • Compaq SystemPro Multiprocessor or 100% Compatible • MPS Uniprocessor PC • MPS Multiprocessor PC • Standard PC • Standard PC with C-Step i486 • Other 3. Continue with Setup to complete the installation. The problem is I can't get any of these options to come up - it spends less than a second on the "Inspecting you Computers Hardware" screen, and no matter how much I hit F5 it won't come up. The PC is currently set as ACPI Multiprocessor and I think I need to get that selected in the setup - but I can't! Am I even on the right track? Pretty soon this thing is just going to visit a PC doctor, because I'm rapidly getting sick of this bullshit

  9. From out of nowhere, Win XP has stopped booting. It gets to the black screen with Win XP logo and the blue progress bar and almost immediately hangs. No error screen, no idea why it's gone wrong. I'm in safe mode now, and have no idea what could be going wrong? Does anyone have a tip on where to start looking?
  10. HD is in it's infancy amongst the FTA TV networks here - there'll be more dedication to HD next year by all of them
  11. Just pick it up and carry it :badgrin Be sure to bend at the knees - protecting your spine is very important
  12. If we are on target to meet the standards set out in Kyoto, then why not sign? As soon as we're included we can have a voice on the world stage in encouraging others to sign up who really do need to cut emissions AND (re: Anakin's post) if we're already on track, then the farmers are in no danger at all as nothing needs to change - it's business as usual
  13. We've had that "lack of keeping them in check" problem for the last 3 years as Howard owned the Senate. I read somewhere that the record is 100% of all Gov't propositions were approved by the Senate with no changes, 98% of propositions from the Opposition were denied. The IR reforms that were rammed through would never have been approved if the Senate was balanced Labor won't own the Senate going forward, and so won't be able to do anything they want. Last I heard was that the Greens are likely to hold the balance of power. If anything the "checks" are actually now back in place :)
  14. The housing boom could have been nipped in the bud a long time ago. All it would have taken is a federal mandate to tighten up credit in the finance sector - there were, and still are, too many loans for 108% of the property price given to those who can't afford it. These are also known as Sub-Prime mortgages, and look whats happened to the USA and soon to happen to England .. it's only a matter of time ... Tighter credit is what this country needs, and needs it asap. John H and Peter C are to blame for not controlling it. They wanted the boom to continue, because it was putting untold amounts of wealth into the collective pockets of Baby Boomers, which are the only generation the Coalition Gov't gave a shit about. Hence the First Home Buyers grant, designed to be the carrot to get young people excited about property despite the drastically overinflated prices. Such a sad thing to behold, parents financially raping their children over a commodity as essential as housing. If you need more proof of the Coalition's disinterest in young Australia, look to the explosion in the cost of education under JH & PC's watch. Then they relaxed tax laws on superannuation contributions, so the Boomers could gear up or sell those overpriced properties and dump it all into their super funds. A gov't for the rich if ever there was one. I know Kev & Co are untested, but at least they have a fresh approach. I couldn't be happier that the Coalition are gone, as they turned their back on my generation in favour of those about to retire, to say nothing of the rampant lies they expected us all to believe.
  15. Interest Rates are going up regardless, but thank god Aussies have finally seen thru the bullshit AWB, Iraq, Interest Rates, GST, Childcare rebates, Workchoices. Bye Johnny. Thanks for the memories, even though they weren't so great
