  1. Well what was once a simple personal challenge, is now a bitter and intense rivalry. Originally, all I wanted/needed to do was clock Twin Cobra on one credit, and once I'd achieved that I could be completely satisfied and move on, so to speak. Well, I did achieve my goal and managed a pretty reasonable 2,184,600 points in the process. Unfortunately, my younger brother recently managed the same feat and in doing so racked up 2,275,300 points. Needless to say, I'm very unhappy about this... We have a history of intense video game rivalry that dates back nearly 40 years and I was the Twin Cobra 'king' in our family for a long time and being dethroned does not sit well with me :x. To add insult to injury, he did it on my Twin Cobra cabinet :redface So my new challenge is very simple - beat my brother's score. And of course, hope he doesn't rack up an even bigger one in the meantime. Oh and if I do manage to achieve that, I think I'll join Pessimeister and see if I can set a PB (currently just over 500k) on Raiden II, which is probably my second favourite shooter after Twin Cobra.
  2. Hi OOO, it looks like my Twin Cobra score has also been entered as my 1942 score. I only scored 1,007,160 on 1942, which was good enough for 5th I think.
  3. 79,000. Just had my first go, which isn't ideal with only 1 day to go. Had no idea what I was doing but it was still good fun.
  4. 30,960. Another game I'd never heard of, but are glad to have discovered (thanks to this great gaming comp). :D
  5. I think the only way I'll produce a better game than Derek's effort is if I go back to MAME and use the save/load state functions and some video editing software!
  6. Oh what might have been... Just played my first game on my actual Twin Cobra game board since getting it working again and got a PB ... 1,872,300... if only I'd fixed it two weeks ago, I might have been able to make Derek work a bit harder for the win. On the downside, I was literally one bomb away from a 1CC. I had the final boss flashing bright red on both sides and I just couldn't get my last bomb away before getting shot down :( Ah what an epic shooter it is....
  7. Thanks mate, it's my favourite game so it's fair to say I've played this one a few times :) and with a score close to 1.3 million, you're not too shabby at Twin Cobra yourself! I didn't manage a PB, but my desire to get a bit closer to Derek's score made me get my Twin Cobra PCB out and attempt to get it working again, as I'm convinced it runs a tad smoother in the higher stages than the MAME version. Anyway, a couple of hours ago I carefully pulled off all the Eproms and cleaned up the pins with some fine sand paper and when I plugged the PCB in again it worked! Sadly, it took so long, I didn't have time to get a game in before the comp closed :rolleyes. Anyway, even if I was playing on my game board, I doubt I could have beaten Derek's score - I would have needed all the planets to align for that. Anyway, if nothing else, this comp is responsible for getting my Twin Cobra game board running again :D
  8. 19794. Only ever played this a few times on the C64 back in the 80's, so finding it pretty hard, especially trying to control the bike. Great game though, and I'll bet it was a lot more fun with those handlebars on the original arcade cabinet!
  9. G'day OOO, I actually improved my score slightly yesterday mate. got 1,771,430. :)
  10. 1,771,430. So close to a PB and so close to that elusive final boss... just couldn't keep my composure when things got really frantic :(
  11. 36,390. I'm guessing this game had a 4 way joystick in the cabinet, because it was extremely frustrating playing with an 8 way joystick. I lost a lot of lives because the game did not respond to my joystick inputs, which I can only assume was a result of accidentally pushing on the diagonals. If I was any good at it I would have opened up the control panel and put the joystick in 4 way mode, but seeing as I was absolutely dreadful at this one, I didn't think it was worth it.
  12. 27930. Another one I've never played before (or even heard of to be honest) and it shows... Seems like it would be great fun if you were good at it, but at the moment I'm so bad it's embarrassing :redface Damn, I suck at this game!
  13. I'm just multi-cannon (aka blue spray) all the way mate. Some people change to auto machine gun (aka green laser) for bosses as it's so powerful and finishes them very quickly. Regarding Twin Galaxies, do you have to play on Wolf MAME and record your entire game to have your score accepted? I play on GroovyMAME as I'm running a 30 year old CRT monitor and as far as I know it's the only version MAME that will work properly with a 15 khz monitor...
  14. Yeah mate I went to the Palace arcade two weeks ago and it's fantastic. A really diverse crowd too, you've got your nostalgic 40 somethings like me and then some really young people who wouldn't have even been a glint in the milk man's eye when the arcade scene was big. They've been smart about it too, because they've made sure that the arcade machines are only part of the appeal, they do some great food and drinks (so I'm told anyway, all I did was play games:D ). They are opening another one in Vic Park soon too, so I'm assuming it's been quite the success. They keep records of high scores on a board too. I smashed the Double Dragon high score that was on the board while I was there but didn't have time to hang around and claim it - I lost track of time and was running late for dinner with the wife and I don't think she'd have been too impressed if I missed dinner to claim a high score on a 32 year old video game :062: . Next time I'll make sure I have more time and I'll have a crack at the 1942 high score (I just hope megaderek doesn't visit the arcade first!)
