RetroBorg
I really like bartops and intend to make one or two someday. Here's are few bartop pictures I've collected around the net. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2117/1616832455_d904285239_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2028/1617718642_0f7c271db4_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2013/1617717382_8a3f78f609_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2101/1616828691_f3469f73b4_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2232/1617714072_dad8d76e07_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2109/1616825723_e1f6e44c2e_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2395/1616824637_c12cc12fe5_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2109/1617710766_548441d8c6_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2267/1616818987_82d03fd0e9_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2081/1617705086_477b597f74_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2258/1617703638_6f8fce06a8_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2259/1616814813_65ca97c40c_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2321/1616813339_11bc15d30e_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2268/1617699690_41a38e5c43_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2078/1616811323_b16855884f_m.jpg
dmworking247
Hmm I prefer spacies bartop than that 2k one anyway. Of the ones above... I like these ones: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2013/1617717382_8a3f78f609_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2395/1616824637_c12cc12fe5_m.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2321/1616813339_11bc15d30e_m.jpg The sonic one would have been better with a bigger screen, rounder edges and maybe less CP artwork. ... but of course mine will be better than any of them :D
Super Moderator WOKA Posted October 18, 2007 Super Moderator Share Posted October 18, 2007 The 'PET' one looks cool.. Is it an old Commodore or Tandy..?

spacies
Some cool designs there but Jesus that 2K one is UGLY!! I like things to be simple, although this was the 1st one I built: http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL757/2715941/5432451/115789217.jpg I based it on the top half of a Stargate cab. Cool machine. DM, yours are going to be cool. Stop posting and start working!

Super Moderator WOKA Posted October 19, 2007 Super Moderator Share Posted October 19, 2007 Are those cans end to end or side by side..? 53 cans of Premium light is a pretty good effort Dave..
Nidzdotnet
You could build one of these to fit over a bar fridge and make it look like a normal size cab.. lol.. put a immitation coin slot on the fridge door.

OzStick
I designed a bartop some time ago that I have been delaying the progress on, mainly because I'm not sure that the design work well enough to sell as either a kit, finished product or both. It is a rather simple design and I have omitted the marquee, which after looking around at other creations seems to be a rare thing to do. As a result I am concerned that the cabinet will look a bit too bland and thus nobody will want to buy it. Have a look at the following pics to see a cardboard mock up: The reason for omitting the marquee is that I feel it may partly obscure the view of the monitor, depending what angle to sit/stand at the cabinet to play it. One other thing I am looking to do is alter the monitor rotation so it is vertical instead of horizontal. Most bartops are single player and after a bit of thought it makes more sense to design it that way. The cabinet would then be a bit narrower and possibly taller. A bit of feedback on such a simple design would be gratefully received....... Cheers, Chris
Crafty
Hmmm seems bartops are having a bit of a popularity spurt at the moment. I personally like the concept but don't know weather I would actually want one as a Mame machine. Unless i lived in a flat/apartment. If they were a dedicated bartop like a galaga etc then OK. i would get a few. (Galaga, PACMAN, etc etc) For all the effort I seriously think people would rather a full size cabinet, ?? Lowboy. Might start a pole. :)

spacies
Hi Chris, It needs a marquee. Without one it just doesn't remind me of when I was a teenager running around inside an arcade reading marquees trying to find my favourite games. Thats what this hobby is about I reckon. Usually you play these on a dining table, coffee table etc while seated. I have found that if you don't make the step from the marquee back to the screen too big, you won't lose any part of the picture. Also make sure the monitor isn't right at the top, leave a space. Definitley mount the monitor vertically. Playing Streetfighter etc just doesn't work on these little machine. They move around a bit when you get a 'non gamer' using them. You could limit the games to vertical by just have 2-3 buttons too. Your machine would look cool with Space Invaders art, 'cos it kinda has that shape. dmworking247
Chris, your mockup looks like my original concept sketch, but I added a marquee for the same reason Spacies mentioned. If you angle the lower marquee panel and display properly, you'd have to be on quite an angle to obscure the view... the equivilent of standing on a chair to play an upright. Take a look at how my bartops are coming along... I'm sure you could make a simplified version of these without the removable control panels, side admin panel, etc.
Arsenic Hipster
I agree, it needs some sort of marquee. As is I reckon the shape resembles an old computer. Though I'm not a fan of bartop designs to start with.
