You mean I'm not the only Linux user on the planet? :107:

No I'm a convert. BTW, found that ubuntu firefox 1.0.7 (default on breezy) was a bit slow. Just installed Swiftfox, (based on FF 1.5.0.1), much much faster and compatible with all my extension. Excellent.

Swiftfox is an optimized build of Mozilla Firefox for AMD processors including Athlon XP, Athlon 64, Duron and Sempron.

EDIT: Looking forward to dapper when the final is released.

I tested out Dapper Flight 4 (the name of their latest release candidate for the next scheduled April stable release of Ubuntu). It looks good. Lots of improvements for all those fiddly things that gives people the shits about Linux like power management (especially for mobile/laptop users), heaps of new and improved wizards for setting up hardware and software, and a much friendly desktop and icon scheme.

Kudos to the Ubuntu dev team for actually giving a shit about the end user. The rest of the Linux community could learn a great deal from them. And likewise Kudos to them for taking the time to listen to user feedback AFTER a release (not jsut before one). To many Linux distros make a release, and then sit around gloating about how good it was. The Ubuntu devs make a release, and 2 days later are jumping in head first into their forums listening to feedback and making revisions for the next release in 6 months time. Finally someone who understands software is not a product, but a process. Top stuff.

Im still waiting for Debian to get some better video drivers for xserver. The last stable release couldnt deal with my video card, and unix command line gets a bit boring after a few days.

Speak for yourself. I've been using it for 15 years without any dramas. :)

There's always the VESA and/or SVGA drivers in X that work with 99.99% of cards out there. FBDev modes too if the kernel supports your card and X doesn't.

Maybe a tad off topic but its close. I got my first virus that actually did something to my computer. I couldn't open favourites and some other programs, telling me that my licence wasn't recognised etc. Anyway, I backed up any files photos and anything else I wanted and reformatted the laptop. Beign a fairly computer illiterate all I had to do was load a disk that came with the computer and it asked me a dozen times if I really wanted to wipe the hard drive. I downloaded AVG virus software that Elvis recommends. Ditched Nortons, sacked. Anyway, starting with a clean computer is great. Runs unreal, fast and the virus checker works great so far. I was this close to buying an apple, but on the good old wirless the other night some computer guru was saying that they are not totally invunerable anymore and that they will start to see problems. Damm.

Anymore freeware stuff you guys recommend.
