TZ replacement clock board - are they any good?

Two I know of - PBLiz (copies the original two board layout) and Rottendog, a single board solution. I bought a Rottendog for my TZ and it worked flawlessly, although I have heard that there might be a preference among some for the PBLiz version as the optos diffuse the light better. That was one thing I didn't like about the Rottendog board, but it certainly worked well so far as running the clock itself.

My TZ already had a new clock board installed when I acquired it, and I have had no problems. I have another TZ that Im restoring at the moment with an original board and I now realise why they burn out............they get so hot that you could fry an egg on the housing.

You can alter the existing board, but in your case if the board is burnt out then the best option IMO is to get rid of the old sucker, and definatelt go new, not NOS.

Just looking into buying the replacement TZ clock board as mine is cooked. Has anybody bought one and had any problems with it. Are there different replacements boards out there?

John, Wayne sells this clock board, for Twilight Zone. Don't know whether they have been improved or still suffer the same original problems over time.

I bought the German version a while ago from B&T Automaten and I also have

the single Rottendog board as well. I haven't done a test yet to see which is best. Although, I am leaning towards the B&T one at the moment due to the LED placement and setup.

Or you can get the TZ LED Kit from Pinbits which Martin Reynold's has a guide to his clock repair for them. I'm pretty sure he did a mod also for Rottendog's board with broad beam led's, though can't really provide a link because Kevin Steele's Retroblast site has closed down. Now that was a great site.

Cheers,

  • 2 weeks later...

Got the board but found the LED's light distribution is not so wide. It looks like 4 small dots on my clock face. Plus I have the new blue housing - the LEDs just dont showcase the blue housing to its full potential. Also, maybe the LEDs need to be installed on their sides and not upright with longer legs to reach the corners to hilight the housing (if blue or red). Not bagging the board - its just the LEDs.

Are there LEDs you can get locally (similiar to the ones at Pinbits) that will distribute the light wider?

Thanks Savage, now that looks alot better. I'll do the same.

I modded the existing clock board with LED's from Jaycar. They were the brightest ones (had 3 variations)

Mounted them bent, so they are on their sides. With a blue case and seem to do a pretty good job.

Got a pic in the gallery of the clock before and after..

Sorry John. I did say that I didn't get a chance to test them against each other yet. The mod for the Rottendog one by Martin Reynolds with the bigger LED's like Savage is talking about seems to do the job fine.

I'm a little confused. :017: The socketed one that BAA is selling, is that this one, the B&T one advertised on their site?

no worries Dan, I will just change the LEDs on mine to ones that spread the light wider and brighter, plus move them to the corners - cheap and easy fix.
