Help with MAME version and settings

Recommended Posts

I have downgraded MAME from v0.118 to v0.79 - when I launch "19xx: The War Against Destiny", the screen is displayed sideways. Is there a setting in MAME to change the screen orientation? This wasn't a problem in v0.118, all vertical games appeared correctly on the screen, top-to-bottom. Other vertical games (1941, 1943, 1944) are all working.

Also, I received some advice previously to use an earlier version of MAME because v0.118 is resource-intensive. I have downgraded the MAME version on my PC but now some of the ROMs don't work, so I am wondering which version of MAME I should be using for the best performance of games (mostly from the 80's and some early 90's)? I assume later versions of MAME accommodate a larger set of ROMs and improvements? :unsure

hmmm this sounds very strange... u could try a clone of the 19xx: The War Against Destiny perhaps it would work.. also the video options found in mame (ie to rotate a screen) are found in mame versions 0.107 and higher

regarding versions of mame?: basically u need to match ur rom set with ur version of mame. i downloaded a set a while back, it prob doesnt match the newer or extremely old versions of mame. u need to use a program to audit your roms e.g. clrmame

http://www.clrmame.com/

i use mame 0.107 for most games and fastmame version 0.99 i think.

when did u download ur rom set? which version is it??? 0.79 might be too old

I am much more interested in installing the best MAME version for performance rather than matching MAME to my ROM set. If I have to sacrifice some games (e.g. 19xx) for better performance of other games overall, so be it. Since v0.118 is resource-intensive, which version of MAME is the latest I could use that is resource-friendly? And does that version of MAME still allow the "skip_gameinfo" and "skip_disclaimer" switches?

about the skip switches im not sure really, i know i can turn them off in 107 and older..

for my purposes im running 107 on an amd xp 1800 (1.53ghz), with 256mb ram, and a 32mg gforce2mx. everything up to mortal kombat 2 runs fine.

i have managed to get mk2 and mk3 plus other midway games like hangtime or wwf mania working on my hardware using fastmame 0.98

here is a link

http://www.geoshock.com/getfiles/?fastmame098b.rar

also newer versions of mame are supposed to be more accurate aswell in their emulation hence the decrease in performance

check out the mame faq

Should I re-install the latest version of MAME and work my way backwards until I find the "sweet spot"? How did you determine that v0.107 was suitable for you? :unsure

um.....

just download different versions and run games????

see if u are getting no loss of frames, or crc errors.

i basically have narrowed down my rom list for the cab im building to about 250.

in this list i have ensured their emulation status is good, and that they run at full speed on my hardware..

My ROM set is quite big, I don't fancy running every game on every MAME version! When I am running the games, how do I determine that they are running at full speed? And what do you mean by "their emulation status is good"?

Matthew

my complete romset includes thousands of games but as i have said i narrowed my list down to a "best of" collection including games which i think were standouts for their time or games which i enjoyed playing.

to determine if it is running at full speed just see if the game is lagging, or dropping frames, u need to press F11 (when in a game) to display the frames per second. if this value stays the same (and is full e.g. 60/60 then ur game is running at full speed). if it is like 10/60 then it will appear quite choppy.

i think we have gone through this before

http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/mameguide/mamecontrol.htm

the above link has all the keys used in mame.

just use common sense... newer games e.g. Mortal Kombat 2 ran on faster hardware therefore will need a faster cpu to emulate them, older games like space invaders only need slower hardware. a majority of games after 2000 (even mid 90's) started to use hard disk images as well as roms, u will struggle to run any of these games at full speed.

just try the games which u want to play in the end, it only takes like 2 seconds really. load a game.... press f11, play for 10 seconds, if there is no lag then no problems :p

by emulation status good... is the game emulated so it has no errors and it looks like the original... if emulation status is imperfect u may find some graphics are corrupted or missing as well as sound problems. when u load a game in mame for the first time (for a particular version) it will tellu if there is a problem with the emulation, if it doesnt its all good.

also u dont need to reinstall mame all the time.... just copy ur mame.exe file of another version into ur mame folder (rename ur old mame.exe to something else so u dont overwrite it), and prob delete ur mame.ini if u have created 1.

Is it possible that a game that runs choppy or not at full speed in a later version of MAME can run perfectly in an earlier version of MAME?

I have "skip_disclaimer" and "skip_gameinfo" switched on, will I still see the "problem with emulation" messages?

Aren't there some versions of MAME that create extra folders and files that other MAME versions don't? For example, MAME v0.118b creates "previews" and "snap" folders, and "jedutil.exe" and "ledutil.exe" files, but MAME v0.79 does not. And MAME v0.79 creates a xml2info.exe file but MAME v0.118b does not. How do I know which files and folders are required for different versions of MAME?

YES!!!!!!!!

YES u will!!!! to turn these messages off u need to either download a modified version of mame (e.g. buddaMAME)

check this link

not really.

keep everything in the folder, just change ur mame.exe when testing

also another way to remove all nag screens is to compile ur own version of mame following this guide

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=64298.0;all

its quite complicated but its what i did

u can also get highscore support using highscore.dat in mame versions above 107
