AtomicFE as shell in XP

Recommended Posts

nope.i use GameEx myself.

Does atomicfe have a user forum? have you asked there maybe?

Yep, I asked the question there, no response so I thought I would ask here too. The reason I am asking is because I have set AtomicFE as a shell in XP and it works fine, however I have to set a .bat file in the registry instead of a .exe file so just before AtomicFE is launched (after the PC boots), I see a DOS window which is executing the .bat file. I have tried to no avail to hide this DOS window, I have changed the settings of cmd.exe so that the window is displayed full screen, but for some reason the execution of this .bat file is ignoring my settings. I was hoping someone may have found a solution or workaround.

From a poster on another forum:

Q) I still have a small boot .BAT screen before the app launches? is there a way to get rid of this?

A) I think there is a way. But i would need to investigate more. Like that i can not say.

But i plan to modify Atomic soon to be able to put directly the .exe as shell instead of using a .BAT file. it will solve this problem

This was posted in March 2006 but nothing has been done about it. So I am stuck with the .bat file in the registry. I cannot reference a third-party tool to execute the .bat file, the shell will only work if I reference the actual file (located in C:\WINDOWS). The .bat file does not have any properties like "Run Minimized" that I can set. And launching "cmd" and changing the global properties of the window (size, font etc) has no impact on the DOS window that is launched as part of the shell. If I run the Atomic.bat file manually, the custom properties of the DOS window that I set are used, but when the file is executed as a shell the properties are ignored and the default DOS window is displayed.

Ok what u need to do is create a shortcut to the batch file and you can modify the properties in the shortcut to run minimised :)

wow havent done that for a few years I thought I had killed that part of my brain already ;)

Tried that already, it doesn't work. The limitation of AtomicFE is that the registry must point to a .BAT file :cry

go with mamewah.... its fantastic once its up and running!!!

Nah, I tried that, too many settings and not enough support. AtomicFE is a user-friendly frontend, it's intuitive and easy to setup. MameWah requires too much configuration. I really like AtomicFE, it's just a shame about this shell problem. If I could find a solution, I'd be rockin'!

OK, I found the solution! :D I'll post it here just in case somebody else comes across the same problem.

1) Rename "Atomic.bat" to "go.bat" in C:\WINDOWS

2) Download the program "gobat.exe" from http://sub0.developpez.com/delphi/gobat.zip and copy it to C:\WINDOWS

3) Change the shell key in the registry to point to "gobat.exe"

4) Reboot the PC

AtomicFE now launches with no DOS window in sight! :lol Apparently gobat.exe just redirects the video output of the .bat file to NIL.

felixthadog - would you be interested in helping setting up this front end on my mame cab's pc? Sounds like you have a winner, Im located in geelong but would be happy to cover your travel costs if your up for a drive to geelong or alternativly, if you would be ok with me dropping by?

The command line dos version of mame was about my limit, trying to setup these windows versions is killing me!!!
