Building a Dual Daytona style, all in one big boys toy

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I’m new to this forum, and I thought I'd introduce myself, I first became interested in all this a few years ago when I spent 4 hours and countless beers playing galaga at some dodgy pub in the city.... After trying to find a second hand machine on the net, I discovered Mame, and the huge community.... Well one thing has lead to another and after building my coffee table galaga machine, I’m now about to start my second project.... Daytona style... dual Cab racing setup for the pool room.... I have a few ideas, Ie linking two xboxs, two PCs, two 68cm TVs....along with two force feedback steering wheels, and of course, some cool surround sound some car seats, and a heap of MDF..... The idea is to have a versatile setup that can play heaps of games Anyway that’s my intro, and I hope I'm not the only nutta who’s attempting this... It would be interesting to know if anyone else is working on a similar project... Cheers

Hi that sounds like a good option, im sure i can pickup a couple of dreamcasts on ebay.... assuming they link together OK.... Ill need to figure out what steering wheel to use so its still compatable with xbox games, as I'd like to have a few different setups... and heaps of options...

My Bad..

Dreamcasts are linkable. Not many games are able to do this though.

Ferrari 355 is a definite. As for Daytona opinions vary. I will be trying it but if it does not link well so be it.

Dreamcast Daytona is still very close to the real arcade game, and I'm happy to play it solo, as well as 18 wheeler, crazy taxi etc etc.:D

Nah I'd get a ROM of the arcade and emulate it.. I think it would be easier especially if your going to incorporate some USB wheels or whatever into it. The wheel that came out with the Saturn was pretty bad. Just get 2 pc's and link em.. that would be easy as. You could even get a few old Dreamcasts cause they had some good driving ports from the Arcade. I think Daytona 2 or something was on it. And Crazy Taxi and a few of those types of games. Even a couple of Xbox's you could get for $150 each..

Anyway it's a massive project you've taken on there.. I hope you got plenty of room and Timber! Post lots of pics as you progress..

Decided to go down the XBox and PC emulation path... Have a few options for Daytona on the PC which Ill check out this weekend. Problem with the dreamcast option is getting a wheel compatable. Still will continue to research. Thanks for all your feedback on the project. I'll post some pics on the progress. Cheers

  • 4 weeks later...

Amost Finished Twin Driving Cab

Well, after a few weeks, and many beers, I've almost completed the project. Ended up going with two Xbox’s... so haven’t exactly made a Daytona machine, but have plenty of other car games that work great... Outrun, V8 Supercars, Rallysport etc...Here is a pic.. All I need to do now is cleanup with some gap filler, give it a lick of paint, some cool graphics... done! all for a very low budget. Cheers

HOLY CRAP! Where did this project come from?

Wow... well done, one day (when the kids move out, I win the lotto, and buy a bloody big house, and after I put my pool table in) I want racing cabs like this and equivilent flight sim cabs.

Well done, I'm very impressed... but now we're all going to want more information on how you got this far, and updates on where you go from here!

PS: Two xbox's eh... MAME runs on xbox , I know MAME doesn't support networking directly but there may be some mod's for it?

I'll put together a few more pics to show some progress shots... naturally I have taken a few snaps as I progressed! I do plan to get Mame running and have all the bits to connect two PCs as well.. At the risk of going overboard ... lol... I might also attempt to switch between driving and flight sim controls! My next big challenge is deciding what to call it.... "Daytona" doesn’t feel right given I can’t play Daytona on it!

few more pics

Here are a few more pics...

Some of the bits used:

2 X VN Car seats - fully adjustable

Set of Car seat covers... Ferrari

2 X THRUSTMASTER steering wheels with force FB etc (average, but do the job)

2 X 68cm TVs

2 X Xbox’s

2 X Logitech X530 5.1 speakers

A few slabs for sustenance

Lots of 18mm MDF/ some bits of red gum, to keep in theme of pool room, and add extra strength (this thing aint going anywhere!)

That is TOO COOL!

Very nice work Galagabizz. Was actually thinking about how to do something similar over the last couple of weeks. I don't have any space for this sort of project though.

I like how you've used 2 X-Box's. A nice cheap solution with an arseload of racing games and decent graphics.

Just one thing - as far as I know force feedback doesnt work with xbox 1 (only rumble) or have you got some sort of custom rig with the forces there?
