Ps2 to play JP titles?

Recommended Posts

Any 'modern' modchip for the PS2 should allow games from all regions to run on a console from any particular region.

There *MAY* be some problems (B&W, sync) viewing NTSC games on a really old TV, but most modern TV's handle them fine.

I'm running ModBo 2.1 in my "chubby" PAL PS2 solely and wholly for the purposes of playing NTSC-J titles. I got it from mod-chip.com in Germany:

http://www.mod-chip.com/index-cart-us.php?go=en/select_ps2_main.htm

Although if you're not crash-hot at soldering (or don't have a good mate who is), it's a good idea to get a local modchipping mob to do it. PS2 mods in particular require attaching to ultra-tiny wires and chips, and it can be painful.

My current PS2 NTSC-J import list (I buy everything from Play-Asia, as they have crazy-cheap shipping):

Street Fighter 3: Third Strike

Mushihime Sama

DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou

E.S.P. Galuda

Ibara

Neo Geo Battle Coliseum

Hokuto No Ken (aka Fist of the North Star)

Melty Bloody Act Cedanza

And I've got Arcana Heart on pre-order for it's release next month.

If you don't like modding, there's always Swap Magic. But I like the convenience of being able to play imports without needing to swap discs back and forth. Although modding does void your warranty, which can be an issue if the console is brand new (I bought mine second hand, so it was a non-issue for me).

im looking forward to giving arcana heart a go hope it is good enough to enter into my rotation of fighting games i love to go though. Thought i would of seen Ibara on that list i guess if you were gonna buy the ps2 version though you might as well just buy the pcb now-a-days.

The Japanese are all about highly-offensive games lately. Defensive/zoning games are out of fashion, and Arcana Heart follows the trend of the Guilty Gear and Melty Blood style games. Not really my cup of tea, but if it's the way fighting games are headed, I should learn it.

At the very least there's a grappler (ala Zangeif/Hugo) character in Arcana Heart, so I'm happy with that. :)

HAHA! I knew I missed one! :)

im not really a guilty gear hater i used to be but lately i was playing some antient core and a few of the charactors have grown on me. I still would prefer to play a snk fighting game garou: motw, kof 98 or last blade in the long run but playing a few rounds of gg is always entertaining and add's a new prettyness factor to all the old neo geo fighters i usually play.

well i have just purchased Mushihime-sama , Ibara- And espgaluda So now i need a ps2 again.

I might even buy a JP one from play -asia?

Buying a JP PS2 is definitely the least intrusive way to do things. Problem is you can't get warranty on it outside of Japan, but not modding it certainly reduces the chances of laser burnout and all that other nasty stuff anyway.
