Guest gunigoogoo
Does anyone know if it's ok to use 400V bridge rectifiers instead of 200V? The manual says BR1-BR5 should be the 200V variety but these seem hard to find in Adelaide. Cheers.
0 Ballypinball
Just means they will carry a higher current should work fine
0 Strangeways
I use 400V BR in Bally / Stern power supply rebuilds. The 400V is the highest voltage the BR will work at. They will probably be 35A, which should be fine.
0 Guest gunigoogoo
Yes they are 35A. I just noticed that 1 of the good BR's on the board is already a 400V one so it must be OK to use them.

They will be these ; Product ID: GBPC3504W Bridge Rectifier, 400V, 35A, Wire Leads. I usually order heaps from GPE, just follow the link ; http://www.greatplainselectronics.com/products.asp?cat=18&pg=
0 Guest gunigoogoo
Thanks for that mate. I think Aztronics here in Adelaide has these also. They just don't stock the 200V variety but now that I know 400V is ok, it's all cool :098:. Now for my first attempt (read fuck up) at changing over a BR. Fingers crossed. 0 lien_Zed
jaycar should have them too by the truck load as well as tricky dicky

0 Guest gunigoogoo
Went to Jaycar, Aztronics and DSE at lunch. None of them have the one with the wire legs. Any suggestions? Beejay imports is on the other side of town for me unfortunately.
0 BodgeyBen
It's good to use the larger bridge, you will probably find that it will never fail again. Use Aztronics over Dick Smith or Jaycar, they are good people and will give you far better service and the staff actually have electronics knowledge. Aztronics also host nights for different electronics and computer clubs.
0 Guest gunigoogoo
I just rang Aztronics in the city and they have 36 of them but the one at Blair Athol has 0 which is where I went at lunch. Just as well I have a meeting in town tomorrow. Time to stock up. Cheers.
0 buzz66
Just to make a correction on the voltage. The difference between a 200volt and 400 or 600 volt Bridge is the maximum rated voltage at which they can operate. It has nothing to do with being able to carry more current, and it will not run any cooler. Williams only used a 200 volt bridge because they are cheap bastards! Also Williams went to individual diodes on the WPC 95 boards. Everyone thinks this is better, It's not. I have seen some pics of these boards with bigger burns marks than the older style boards. A full bridge rectifier has greater surface area to dissapate heat than individual diodes. Once again Williams did it because it's cheaper. 0 sparkythepinmonkey
I have found the AZtronics in Adel to be more helpful in sourcing stuff. Unless you want a regular item, Enfield is a bit of a 'brick-wall'. :rolleyes
0 xygt
I bought a whole stack of the wire ones from Aztronics in Adelaide, so they must be able to get them.
0 bleugh
bridge rectifier any old one will do, provided it's of higher capacity voltage / current than the one it's replacing if the dims are wrong, simply use some thick gague wire to solder to the legs from the PCB quite literally all a bridge rectifier is, is 4 diodes in a particular arrangement! google "full wave bridge rectifier" for more info
