New TABLETOP from MICROSOFT - Sweet!

Recommended Posts

Surface is the first commercially available surface computing platform from Microsoft Corporation. It turns an ordinary tabletop into a vibrant, interactive surface. The product provides effortless interaction with digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects. In essence, it’s a surface that comes to life for exploring, learning, sharing, creating, buying and much more. Soon to be available in restaurants, hotels, retail and public entertainment venues, this experience will transform the way people shop, dine, entertain and live.

It looks OK - I like the integral cover/keyboard, this protection is what the iPad lacks.

I'm interested in it however, I'm certainly a potential victim for them :lol

It's a tablet with keyboard/trackpad attachment. Tabletop WTF? I could call it a floortop or a bedtop in that case. *NOTE that you posted this 5 years ago. Nice :)

Microsoft need to have a decent tablet that will:

  • showcase Windows 8 to consumers, on a device that is designed by Microsoft (think Apple; hardware and software)
  • showcase to OEM's that THIS is the benchmark. You have to build tablets that are at THIS level. MS is worried about the OEM's building crap quality junk so Microsoft have built Surface to set a benchmark that OEM's have to at least meet.

The Tablet form factor is relatively new and Apple has creamed the marketplace with the iPad. OEM's have produced many Android based tablets but nearly all are of a quality that cannot match Apple. Cue Microsoft. They now have press-released the Surface (which is not available to purchase yet), in an multi-pronged attempt to capture more marketshare from Apple. The Surface may not be available to purchase for a long time (if at all in Australia). The points are as outlined above. Set the benchmark so OEM's build better device based on Windows 8.

Microsoft maybe treading a fine line of their relationship with the OEM's in releasing their own Tablet but at least there is a clear framework for OEM's to start from (one of the major points for MS releasing the Surface). Next month will see a major Australian computer distributor do its annual roadshow. There I expect to see a smattering of poorly designed, mis-match and misfit, hybrid, semi-quasi laptops come tablets come ultrabooks. The OEM approach is to make a heap of shite, throw it at the market and see what the market likes. The Surface is telling the OEM's what to at least start with.
