Monitor issue - Dot in the middle of the screen

mamejay

Question

Hi Guys,

I have a 21" VGA monitor which I brought from ebay ages ago. It was a brand new gaming monitor.

I have it setup on the test bench and all I get is a 2cm dot in the middle of the screen.

I have another one like it and normally you would get a test pattern or something like that.

Its is labeled as Microview as the brand.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you have it on the test bench you have probably forgotten to plug in the deflection Yoke , a dot means no Horizontal or Vertical Deflection , if both sections of the chassis had failed you wouldn't get anything so it has to be the Yoke not connected .

If you turn the Brightness all the way down the dot should be much smaller than 2cm .

Okay. i got a picture running now. As I said the monitor was brand new and I had not soldered on the cable to the deflection yoke. Once this was done and plugged into the chasis a picture was got.

There is one more problem. Could be just related to the monitor control panel.

The on screen display just flashes up for a second and then disappears. This is okay for brightness, contrast and degauss as you can just hold the buttons and away you go. For screen stretching etc this cannot be perform as the OSD disappears to fast.

Its a Microview Model : MOT-2021/SVGA

Any help? Jomac I hear you have been working with monitors for a while. Any advise?

The signal is coming from my laptop. I have had another monitor which was the same and it would work on the test pattern with no input. I suspected stuck buttons but not sure now to test these. I will have a play and see what I can find out.

From Mamejay's description, it may be one of the multitude on 20" SVGA monitors that flooded the market a couple of years back - Bumper Action had pallets of them. Some came fully assembled, others were just tubes, many were touch screen.

So it could be that he bought one that was only half assembled.

I have attached a couple of pics of the only one (unfortunately) that I managed to get hold of, so Mamejay let me know if it looks like your monitor.

Monitor1.jpg Monitor3.jpg

They are a Toshiba tube with an Entron chassis which were supplied by Microview.

Mamejay if you're having issues with the OSD it may be worthwhile calling Microview to see what they suggest.

Cheers,

Chris

At one stage bumper couldn't give these away for $25 each , they are ok for static pictures like they were designed for ( Poker machines ) but didn't really handle many of the demands of standard video games.

The OSD not staying on is something I have been asked about before on these , it seems to be a shortfall in the design that was never addressed .

These same entron monitors were also labelled FREE VOLTAGE but if you connected them to the mains they explode! they need an isolation transformer .

Thanks Ozstick and Jomac. That is the monitor I have. I was going to explain about the monitor but couldn't be bothered biting. Ozstick do you have any contact details for Microview?

Dezrae thats really good you run your own business. Not sure if Amway is classed as a business till you start making money though.

(Couldn't help myself)

good call with the time spent on your monitor must be worth a $1000 bucks now.

so i think Dezrae made the correct call, your monitor morphed into a svga most people would ditch a crook vga monitor if it was "new in box" & valued at $25.00 has shrunk a inch, now a 20" i read

Mamejay, Were are you located?

I have set up dozens of these monitor/chassis combinations and I have found them to be the "ducks nuts" when it comes to using them with a PC. The picture quality is excellent (No problems with movement) and I have yet to have one "blow up"

I'm in Melbourne, if you are local maybe I can come round and help.

Thanks to all for the reponses. I have managed to adjust it a little today when I fired it up using a dos screen. The OSD was fliskering but stayed on so I managed to stretch the screen a little. A few moments later it started the disappearing trick again. Also with the VGA connector a friend solders on a VGA cable for me. Does anyone know if the imput from the VGA have anything to do with the OSD issues?

Dave are these model number ET-999A ?? This is the model that you cant run directly from the mains , They will run on 240V but it has to be isolated .

The ET-999A is CGA only , So the VGA model probably doesn't have the same isolation issues.

Thanks for the help guys. With the OSD it still works just disappears. Once you press it once it is enabled just not displaying on screen. You can blindly navigate to the screen stretching required.

Monitor is now mounted and running.

What comment did Dezrae make? What do you mean that it should be worth $1000? I virtually spent 30 minutes looking at it and got it working. i know I am good but I am not worth $2000 and hour.

Your sentence did not make sense.

Where did you get the impression it was a 20"? I have a Hankin cabinet which came with a 20" monitor and I have to make the bezel bigger to support the extra inch.

On-site at the moment so can't check Jomac, but they were purchased from Del (Bumper) and are VGA.

I have a few of these 31KHZ SVGA and the 15KHz CGA models.

The 31KHz monitor chassis model is only labelled with the local Australian MicroView model # MOT-2021/SVGA and mine has been paired with a Toshiba 21" CRT model A51KSV42X02. On the attachment provided by DevoDave above, the model # of the monitor chassis is shown as a 898-21.

I've used this on a MAME machine plugged directly into a PC and it works great. I've also plugged it directly into the mains without an isolation transformer without a problem, but I guess after reading this thread I should have someone who knows what they are doing to check it out.

The 15KHz monitor chassis is labelled as an Entron ET-999A on the main board. It is fully assembled in a metal frame (for poker machines) and is paired with a Toshiba 21" CRT model A51KSV42X02.

I haven't tested this in a standard JAMMA setup as yet but would like to soon with the help of some of you from here if possible.

Claude
