Test gear for monitor repair/adjust

DevoDave

Question

People,

What sort of test gear do you use to repair/adjust monitors?

Do people just use an old jamma board with a screen test, or is there a snappy test unit that can output useful signals?

Any links to useful equipment appreciated.

Wells Gardner make one of the cheaper test pattern generators for arcade monitors , it's about $900 Au , You cant use normal off the shelf pattern generators on arcade monitors , even the WG one needs to be modded to Comp Sync from Seperate to use on other brands of monitors , it's a great unit and outputs correct colour and Sync voltages needed to set up and repair monitors properly , game boards are all different and not suitable unless you are just doing them for yourself and not to fussy .

There are other Generators that I use , one if them is custom modded by Promax for arcade CGA and EGA ( not the same as computer CGA and EGA ) but it cost nearly $4000 .

Is this the Wells-Gardner one you mean Jomac?

http://www.happ.com/monitors/49073400.htm (or http://www.americangaminginc.com/products/products.asp?ItemId=47)

Finding them (or similar) a wee bit cheaper at http://www.gmetechnology.com/

Which model from GMEtech would be the one to get? The MT830A or the MT160?? Would one with NTSC output also be useful?

Also found some whizz-bag high end gear at http://www.sencore.com but WAY out of price range I'm looking at.

Cheaper, smaller unit for PC monitors http://www.datasynceng.com/vgapdoc.htm

Better unit for PC monitors http://www.montest.com/mon-intro.html

It's not the one I was talking about ( I think it's discontinued ) but the Genie One will work if you mod it from seperate H & V to Comp H Sync , I use one of these quite often , especially good because they have a 9V battery so you can plug it into a machine for setting up monitors .

Big problem with these is that they use a custom MPU that is protected and they often die because there is no filter circuit .

WG, and Happ charge $90 each for the IC .

None of the GME range will work on Arcade monitors ( except VGA ), I contacted GME last year when I found out they made the Genie One , They wont supply it to anyone because it has custom coding made under license for WG ., I have a contact in WG that confirmed this , they wont even release the IC part number .

Like I said earlier arcade CGA is similar to Monitor CGA but arcade EGA ( 25K ) is nothing like Monitor EGA that most generators produce , Like the MT160 .

This Promax GV-241 is about the best for computer monitors

http://www.promaxprolink.com/tvgenerators/multimedia.htm , but again it doesnt work on arcade monitors below VGA , which means it is no good for just about everything used in Arcade machines .

There are heaps of other generators out there and none of them off the shelf including the genie one will work on a standard arcade monitor .

I have 2 Genie One's , Both different inside and use different polarity adaptor inputs ( Strange ) !

one is dead with the 7th dead IC !
