Arcade Joystick Help

cenz

Question

Hey guys,

I recently finished my cabinet and installed some new JS02 Zippy joysticks.

I'm not sure if this is right, but the joysticks seem extremely loose compared to my older MCA ones. I often play alot of Street Fighter type games and the MCA seems alot more stiffer and better for performing moves. It's not just that, it seems that if I pull the joystick towards my head (upwards vertically), there is movement. Is this a spring issue? None of my older joysticks ever did this and I'm wondering why there is any vertical movement what so ever? Help!?

I've attached some pics of the joysticks.

Cheers,

Vince

Thats what the zippy's are like. If they are the ones that I am thinking of then they are a rip off of the siemtisu LS-32's which are pretty loose, but not quite as loose as the sanwa's. The movement is because they are spring loaded. The MCA's used a big hard rubber plate, that is why they are heaps stiffer and dont move vertically.

Check out the arcade input thread. Its got all the info that you need.

Holy crap! How quick was that! lol

I was just editing my original post to add the images in and there's already 5 replies!!! Talk about service :)

Ok, so looks as though I've gotten myself into a bit of a pickle... It's almost impossible to play Street Fighter using these sticks :(

My older MCA sticks have short sticks because they were installed into a metal control panel. I've seen extensions that can be installed at the base of the stick to extend it a little for thicker (wood) control panels, where can I get these?

Or, is it possible to strengthen the spring somewhere to make the sticks ALOT more stiffer? This may help a little I think.

Thanks again fella's :)

You can dissasemble the legacy sanwa's and expand the spring in them, but I have never tried with the LS-32. Im sure that it is possible. As far as the MCA extenders go, I have only seen two on ebay. They seem like an obscure item, but maybe people are just hoarding them. :D

Again i can't comment on the actual sticks themselves...

But you need to get used to the style of the joystick... it can take sometime to transition from mcas to sanwa style, but once you do you will not go back.

Note all major street fighter tournaments will use sanwa... so stick with it and it you still don't like it in a few weeks then switch them back ;)

Regarding the tighter question... some are adjustable. Someone which has your exact joystick might be able to help out.

Thanks guys..

Just so I know everyone understands, please see the picture attached of the movement that is happening. It's about 1cm vertical movement when pulling the ball directly up.

You are using a Japanese style joystick. These are by design:

1) Loosley sprung

2) Shorter and designed to be mounted in a metal panel roughly 1-4mm in depth.

There's nothing you can do about the spring of the stick. That's how they are designed. Spend a bit of time using them and you'll get used to it. I used to only play on American Happ style sticks with heavy springs, but over time have gotten used to these Japanese style sticks (to the point where I can't play as well on anything else). Especially for fighters and shooters, you'll soon find out why the top players use these.

For the depth of the stick, you'll need to counter-sink your joystick if you use a thick wooden control panel. Any router with a standard cutting bit will do. If you have 18mm timber, try counter sinking it 10mm or so so that you end up with a hole deep enough to mount the stick, but strong enough to take a beating.
