Hi guys,

I'm looking for new joysticks for my cabinet. I love the sf series. Currently replacing the old MCA's... but now i'm torn with making a choice. So which do you reckon are the best?

Happ Joysticks (alot of shoryuken.com guys use that)

Sanwa (available from ozstick.com.au)

MCA (local made i think)

If there are any others could you please recommend them to me?

Cheers

Howie

As it says on the ozstick site, the sanwa's do feel VERY lightly sprung, infact they almost feel like they are broken, but they are very good for fast movements that are required in fighting games.

I dont think that i have ever really tried happ's ones. The two cabs that i own have got MCA's. They are incredibly indestructable, infact i think that they would be the only item to survive a nuclear holocaust. But at the same time they do feel very rigid and tight. Movement in some directions can feel more "free" than in others also, so this can be an issue.

One thing to watch out for is that alot of the newer jap joysticks dont connect up to the microswitches. Instead they have got a universal 5 pin connector that runs a common ground with up, down, left and right all having their own unique pin.

Its up to you though. If i had the cash and some spare time then i would probably convert to sanwa's or another jap brand as i dont have to worry about reliability. (op's love mca's cause they are tight asses :evil )

MCA's feel a little inprecise for my liking but given that my MCA's are probably 10 years old now, it's of little surprise. Sanwa's look great, happ is what i believe they use on X-Arcade consoles... I'm learning towards the happ's at the moment, perhaps I should visit my local arcade and see how they all feel :) I'll tell the missus i'm off to do a bit of 'research' at the arcade parlour hehe

Well being the sf2 king that i am :P

I'm still a fan of the mca's. Probably because that's what i am use to playing with at home and arcade.

Sanwa's are the sticks that are used on cabinets like the sega aerocity?

Not a big fan of the cabinets or the sticks. As everyone has already said they are way too light for my liking.

afaik, aero city cabs didnt have Sanwa's. I think that the astro and blast city cabs had them though. There are heaps of cheapo sanwa knock-off floating about in arcades though. (tight asses);)

Another alternative to Sanwa is Seimitsu. Very similar quality and feel. While where on the subject, how many of you guys like the jap style buttons?

Our western buttons, designed for big fat dis-honorable western fingers, or the dome top jap buttons? I really have no preference but some of the fighter and shooter dudes are pretty picky about em.

Ah yes i think i am thinking of astrocity. I'm just not a big fan of japanese cabinets. I preffer the good old fashion lai style wooden ones that you find at the fish and chip shop.

I preffer the 'iny's' rather then the 'outy's' when it comes to buttons, but i'm not going to really complain either way.

I am yet to find my perfect stick. I changed my mca sticks on one of my cabs to sanwa bat handle type and found them awesome for fighting games (not that I play them much). They have a great quality feel to them and good for quick movements. I am however not convinced with them for all other gaming. I often have trouble with vertical and horizontal movements accidently going to diagonals due to the short throw action.

Going back to a mca stick after a sanwa was not good for me. They just feel slow and not as precise.

Happ have a huge throw and feel slow to me.

Basically I'm still on the search.

I'd love to vote, but I won't due to obvious bias!

What I will say though is the same as I always tell customers - it comes down to personal feel. Whatever you are most accustomed to using will feel best for YOU. I don't think anyone can say that one stick is more suited to a particular game than another.

I really should have been a politician after saying a lot but offering nothing, shouldn't I!!??

Hi Howie,

The sticks in the X-Arcade consoles are a Chinese knock-off of the Happ Super, but definitely not the same quality or feel.

I know this for absolute fact as I know who their supplier is, because we got some sample product from us and they sent us a quote with "X-Gaming" on it instead of OzStick!!!!!!!!!!!

Happ and MCA are the only ones in this list I've tried and I just can't stand MCA's. I've had Ultimarc T-Stick and T-Stick Plus' in my cabs and love them but they are heavily sprung and therefore not well regarded for fighters. But I don't play fighters which is why they're the best for me. That being said there isn't enough physical space in my coctail to fit them so I'll be using Sanwa balltops.

I play the Street Fighter family of games a heck of a lot (I'm talking daily competitions with workmates and friends). At the end of the day it's personal preference, but for me I find it the Happ Competition Pro sticks to be the best. I can pull off any move with these flawlessly, including difficult ones like Zangief's spinning piledriver and super moves (requiring 1 and sometimes 2 complete circles).

The Shoryuken kids seem to like the Happ Perfect 360 sticks. These are optical, and not microswitch based. I've not used them myself, as I found the price offputting. That, and you need a 5V source for the optics to work.

Second to fighting games, shmups are my next favourite style. For these, Sanwa style sticks are a winner (I have two OzStick Sanwa balltops in my first cabinet), especially on modern "manic" or "twitch" shooters where very quick and very slight movements are needed to avoid a screenful of bullets. The light-spring Sanwas are a real winner there.

I find using the Sanwas on fighting games, I tend to not pull moves out as often as I do on the Happs. My games are definitely worse on those sticks. This is quite probably due to the fact that I play more frequently on the Happ sticks and know their feel better, but in particular doing the full 360-degree style moves never come out quite as I expect on the Sanwas.

But as mentioned, to each their own. The only way to know for sure is to get different sticks and try them all out. Like me, you'll probably find different sticks suit different games.

[edit]

Oh, and MCAs are bloody awful. Sure, they take a beating, but they just suck to play anything seriously on.

Gidday!! :) Nice to see you here buddy.

Very interesting fact... i'll definately keep that in mind guys.

At the moment leaning towards the Sanwa's or the Happs. :) This thread's been very education for me in getting a feel of what others are using or/and everyone's preferences.

  • 2 weeks later...

It is worth mentioning that your poll has "Happ" listed as an option, when there are three very common Happ sticks folks use for fighting games (Supers, Competition Pros and Perfect 360s). All three have very different feels, and can be further customsied with a variety of springs.

At any rate, places like RetroBlast have plenty of stick reviews (some on downloadable video too) which might be worth your time.

Nothing beats buying a few different types and trying for yourself, of course.
