Freezing TZ

felixthadog

Question

I am experiencing a problem on my TZ machine that I hope somebody here can assist me to fix. When I press the Start button to start a new game, 00 appears on the display but the ball is not ejected in to the shooter lane and the flippers do not work. I cannot get in to the Diagnostics menu either. Basically, everything freezes on the machine. One thing I have noticed is that the sound is not the normal TZ music at the start of a game, but rather just a "whoosh" sound that plays over and over, but because I cannot get into the Diagnostics menu I cannot determine which sound sample it is playing. I wouldn't know where to start looking, can anybody offer some guidance?

Cheers,

Matthew

Have you recently removed any connectors from the backbox?.

When you switch the machine on. Does it go through it's usual test procedure and go into attract mode as normal?.

I have not removed any connectors, nor attempted any repairs in the backbox or under the playfield. The machine was working one day, then not working the next.

Yes, when I switch the machine on, it goes through the normal test procedures and then goes into attract mode. The problem occurs when I attempt to start a new game.

Hmmm, how about if you remove the glass and see if any other solenoids fire?.

How about the interlock switch when you open the coin door. Does the coin door open message come up on the DMD?.

I will remove the glass tonight after work and try the other solenoids (slingshots, rocket kicker, slot machine kicker etc).

No, the coin door message does not come up on the DMD when I have the coin door open, could that be the problem? :unsure

you can do it like this

http://www.flippers.be/basics/101-interlock_switch.html

or just join the wire on the back on the interlock together

Also check the fuses on the driver board:072:

The interlock switch on my TZ only has 1 prong but the picture in that link shows 2 prongs, would that make any difference? :unsure The interlock switch on my machine did work previously.

Do you mean the 2 wires that run to the 2 terminals on the back of the interlock? They have spade terminals on them, can I just use a spade terminal adaptor to join them together? :unsure

OK, I bypassed the interlock switch by connecting the 2 wires on the back of the interlock switch together, but it has not fixed the problem  I also checked the fuses on the driver board but they all looked OK :unsure Also, I noticed on my JD machine that when the coin door is open, there is no message displayed on the DMD to that effect, and I can't remember ever seeing a message displayed on the TZ DMD either.

Don't know if I'll confuse the issue, but when opening my TZ I don't get a msg on the DMD. I checked the physical switch and it buzzes out ok. Is this normal for a TZ to not display on the DMD? If so maybe he's barking up the wrong tree, and its not an interlock switch problem at all

I have disconnected the wires to the Interlock switch and then connected those 2 wires together - when I start a game and try to use the buttons inside the coin door to enter the Diagnostics menu, the message "To use buttons, open coin door" is displayed on the DMD which seems to indicate that the Interlock switch has been bypassed successfully. I don't think the problem is with the Interlock switch.

Don't be fooled into just looking at the fuses.

I've had plenty that look ok, but when testing, either take the fuse out or lift one end and do a continuity check, I had a few that were no good..

Problem sorted, it was the 7A fuse at F112 (Solenoid Secondary). It looked fine until I tested it with a MM, I removed the blown fuse and replaced it with one from my JD machine and everything works again :D I just need to buy some 7A SB fuses now.

Or never play your JD again :lol Good to see your problem was minor and the bright side is you now know how to test fuses. To let you in on a secret. The TZ is gonna present you with a lot of surprises when it comes to problems seeing its got so many things that can go wrong. Great for learning on though and of course playing and feeling a million dollars when its 100%
