I just did my first ever mod-chip install : Xbox1

Woohoo! I'm definately getting better at soldering.

 

After completing my arcade test unit yesterday (will post that later), I was feeling pretty confident with soldering so I figured I'd try my hand at installing an Xbox mod chip (DuoX2) and new HDD.

 

I bought an xbox1 on ebay for $40, and as (bad) luck would have it, its a model 1.6 which makes installation harder. Oh well, into the deep end!

 

I must say the DuoX2 chip would be remarkably easy to install (if you don't have a version 1.6 xbox). If you get it with the pin header, you simply drop it into the existing holes in the motherboard, solder its 12 pins (yes they're small but not too difficult), pop on the duox2 pcb, solder two wires, and you're done.

 

Because I had the version 1.6 I had to solder some extra wires to 'rebuild the LPC port', as shown in this diagram. Those are small solder points!!!

 

I'm happy to say the xbox worked first go, and now has a 160gb hdd and XBMC/EvoX dash (courtesy of Slayers 2.7 install disc which makes installation easy). Another Xbox media centre... Not bad for a total of $80 (xbox=40, mod chip=20, hdd=20)

 

I'm very impressed at how far my soldering has come... If I can solder to these 0.5mm points on a motherboard I reckon I've reached the point where I can do some arcade PCB repairs, if I can just get better at fault diagnostics!

Btw Jacob I haven't forgotten you. I still have your mod chip on hand, waiting for an opportunity to pass through your neighborhood.

ps2 = patience and good enamel wire! Having dry joints on ps2 and fault finding can be a bitch tho :/ let alone getting the mobo out to solder.

You think that's bad, check out a Wii d2ckey install. Happily there is now a 6-wire solution, but this is what we used to do and it was a real bummer.
