Playing Arkanoid with a mouse

cal2

Question

Ever wanted to be able to play arkanoid (pcb) but don't have the money for a spinner and don't want to play it on mame ?

I have succeeded at hacking a mouse to play with arkanoid. It requires very little soldering and works great.

Here is how it works.

The spinner generates two square signals. The period of the signal depends on how fast you turn the spinner.

The two signals are generated from two phototransistors using an encoder wheel. One is spaced a little from the first so there is

a 90? shift between the two signals.

Mouse (not optical mouses) work the same way. They have one encoder wheel for each axis.

You have to open it and find the phototransistors. The phototransistors should have 4 pins. 2 for the 5V and 2 for the two square signals.

Some mouses use 3 pin phototransistors. They are not usable here because both square signals are merged and we need two separate signals.

Once you have found the pins that output the two square signals for the X-Axis, solder a wire between them and the player left/right pins on the arkanoid pcb.

Also, You have to power the mouse using the arkanoid pcb. So you have to find which pins are used for 5V and GND.

Here is a picture of the final setup :

Once done, arkanoid will work fine with your mouse ^^

cal2 : woah, very cool test setup/bench you have there, way neater than mine, I sometimes have to resort to testing some of my stuff on the floor because of the cramped space I have... my PC and games are occupying the table... LOL
