BSD Pinball Question - neewbie

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am very very new to pinballs! i.e. I have no idea....

I have a q few questions for you. A mate of mine is selling a BSD (cheap) and I just went and had a look at it.

The playfield looks great (no chips/crakcs etc), it is pretty dusty though - whats the best way to clean the ramps/globes/playfield etc?

The transilit is in good condition, as is the body (not too much fading at all).

The machine was imported from Germany, hence the language is in German (can this be changed with updated roms?) Cost?

It is missing the glass - how much does this cost?

Any other things I should be looking out for?

Thanks in advance!

1 - Playfields can be cleaned quite easily - a bit of elbow grease involved, but if there is no paint damage it will come up nice. Clean up dust/grime with Novus #1, then polish and buff with Novus #2, then wax it (carnauba wax) and polish it. You can remove and clean the globes with windex, but it may be quicker and less fiddly to just replace them with new globes.

2 - Language can be changed through the menu - but it will not fix everything. The CPU board needs some jumpers/diodes changed over to set it up for english. Not hard to do, but not something for a beginner to learn on either. Lots of commercial guys can help you there... If there are updated roms, then there are a few folk on here who can burn you new ones at a reasonable price.

3 - The missing glass is a pain - it is hard to ship so the price is usually determined by your local glazier and how much they will charge you to cut and temper a piece for you. Otherwise you can ask around and see if anyone has a spare near you.

BSD is a GREAT machine, I have recently rediscovered how much I like playing it. Shame I don't have one!

Other thing to look out for:

- display has no missing lines/dots or gaps - can be a bad solder joint, or a cracked DMD wire, or takes some time to "Warm up" before blank spots dissappear - that means the DMD is near it's end of life (outgassed) and will need replacing

- batteries have not leaked at any time on the MPU board

- any modified/hacked wires, or wires soldered to boards instead of using the proper connectors

Cheers

Jacob

Thanks - some great comments and ideas.

When powered up it also made 'buzzing' sound form the transformer? anything to worry about there?

A loud buzzing or a hum? The hum is normal, a buzz can be a loose bolt or 2 allowing the metal laminations to vibrate, or the transformer is just not secured to the cabinet properly. You may be able to put pressure on it by hand to quieten it, if so then an easy fix there.

Just double check the hum/buzz is the transformer and not coming from any speakers, if so then there is a bit of work needed on the audio section.

If the transformer is getting HOT (they will get warm over a long period of time - there is a lot of metal there to heat up!) then it may also have not been re-configured properly for Aus voltage when imported (but pretty unlikely).

Cheers

Are you sure it is the transformer or just a sound made as the machine boots up? If it is just as the machine boots up I wouldn't really worry about it.

Look for playfield wear around the Rat hole (right hand side which is very common) and wear near the kickout/hole on the left hand side called the asylum.

Only other real thing to worry about on this machine, which is significant is make sure the mist multiball is working properly. A replacement motor will set you back over $100AUD but they can be sourced from the States.

There are no new ROM versions for the machine so what is in there is what you are going to be stuck with......they obviously felt they got it right the first time.

Another good thing to do is check for any errors on start up. My machine has an error on switch 15 (from memory) which I can't get rid of but the machine seems to work 100%....I may be wrong.

Mate if you like, send me a PM and I can give you my phone number to talk you through anything else with this particular machine. It is a great game and was my first machine that I ever bought and I still have it.

Last thing, the flippers should be shorter in length - yellow with a lightning bolt symbol on them.

Cheers,

Talby
