A few questions from a n00b :P

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just recently found this forum and had a thorough read through the other night! Since there seems to be so much local knowledge, I was hoping I could pick everyone's respective brains to ask a few possibly stupid questions. If I'm posting this in the incorrect section, please steer me to the right place!!

Anywho, here's my situation - I'm looking at finally grabbing a cab and enter the crazy world of arcade PCBs. Loved arcades as a kid, and for a while now I've thought of grabbing a cab, and now that I have a larger area to put all my video gaming stuff, my wife's voiced her mutual support in grabbing a cab for the home.

I've decided I want to grab a 2-player sit-down candy cab, and have my heart set on a Taito Egrett 2 with a 29" Nanao 15/24khz monitor (correct me if I've got this wrong!). In terms of games, I'm particularly interested in pursuing Sega Model 2 and Model 3 games, especially Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, Dead or Alive, Virtua Fighter 3, and probably a handful of others I used to play back when there were still arcades in Adelaide :P I'm also keen on grabbing some old CPS-I and CPS-II titles, as well as one of those multi-boards to play the pre-JAMMA classics in a convenient package (my wife in particular is looking forward to these, as she loves the classic 80s arcade titles).

I reckon I've gotten my head around most of the basics with JAMMA, JAMMA+, JVS (which is used for Model 3, isn't it?) and stuff like that. I've got a bit of hobbyist electronics knowledge as well (mainly for working on old console systems, wiring up 50/60hz, language and region switches, hardwiring extra AV outputs, stuff like that), so I think I have a reasonable familiarity with PCBs and gaming hardware at least from the perspective.

So, what I'm after in terms of clarification is as follows:

- If I want to play VF2/DoA (assuming it's the Model 2A version), I need to have the ROM board, the Model 2A board and a Model 2 video board? If I see someone selling just VF2 or DoA, will that mean its generally only the ROM board and not the whole thing? I've heard the term "kit", does this refer to a sale that includes the ROM board, Model 2 board and video board?

- If I want to play Fighting Vipers, I'm assuming I'll need the ROM board + a Model 2B board -- can I re-use the video board from a Model 2A board? Do I need any other boards to get it working? Similarly, if I wanted to get House of the Dead, would the same principle apply (i.e. Model 2C board + ROM + re-use the video board)?

- I've read that Model 3 doesn't use JAMMA and needs a special power supply, is this true? I figured I could grab one fancy power supply that could do my regular JAMMA games + Model 3, is that possible? Will I need a Model 3 -- JAMMA adaptor?

- With Virtua Fighter 3, it uses the Model 3 Step 1.0 board; if I buy the game, will it have the lot encased in a single chassis, or are the ROM boards separate?

- In general, are the Model 2 and 3 boards backwards compatible with their respective hardware lines? e.g. a Model 2C board will play Model 2A and Model 2B games; a Model 3 Step 2.1 would play all previous Model 3 Step x.x games?

Sorry if these are stupid questions!! I'm still really new to this, and I hope someone here could help out.

Thanks!
