NEOGEO NEO-MVH SLOT 6 - Battery corrosion

BettyCrocker1942

Question

Hi everyone,

I have finally gotten around to fixing up my NeoGeo 6 Slot.

When I fire the machine up I get a strange output and ticking sound from the speakers. :cry

[ame=http://s306.photobucket.com/albums/nn254/BettyCrocker1942/NEOGEO6/?action=view&current=MOV08297.flv]NEOGEO6 :: MOV08297.flv video by BettyCrocker1942 - Photobucket[/ame]

I thought there may be a loose plug or loose chip, so I have pulled it all apart and cleaned the slots/chips/connectors.

Once I had the 6 slot mobo apart I noticed THIS!!!! :x

Does it look beyond repair? I cleaned the tracks and corrosion area as best as I could but I still get the same result as the video above.

I am going to take the battery off and maybe replace it with an offboard unit.

What can I do about the corrosion on the tracks? can they be replaced with wire bridges?

Thanks for any suggestions

What he said!

There ain't much under the battery but it needs to come off! The extent of the damage is probably only that area below, all the tracks there are gong to be shot! It should be an easy fix, a but one tedious tho.

The board will run fine without a battery on board by the way.

Moral of the story is, if you have original batteries fitted remove them before its too late, this is what happened to one of my MVS boards that was stored for a while with a leaky battery. :o

What does everyone recommended for off-board batteries?

I recall seeing a little 3 AAA battery pack with wiring back to where the onboard was. Are these things a good option?

The 3 AA battery deal is usually one 3x AA cell holder with a diode in series (maybe a 1N4001 or something, I guess most silicon diodes will work) to drop 0.6V (nets you like 3.9V), which is close enough to work.

I'm running that on my arcade boards, sure beats having to worry about the battery leaking, and if it does, it leaks into the cab, not on the board. Make sure you have the battery below the board though...

Long weekend and some time to waste!

So based on the info above, I have taken the battery off the board

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn254/BettyCrocker1942/NEOGEO6/IMG_5126.jpg

I've cleaned down the tarnished areas with the Vinegar/Water suggested by AK. So things are looking a little tidier. :023:

I have also ordered a replacement battery suggested by Supremicus. :053:

Im going to pick up my voltmeter later today so I can check the traces and investigate what bridges I will need to solder.

I put the board back in and fired it up. No more ticking noise/screen jumping. Just the crazy pattern.

Apart from the battery corrosion, I have found the bios ic is the cause for that particular fault.

I re-seated the BIOS chip as a quick check. As a sidenote - I may investigate getting a UNIBIOS chip to rule out the current one.

So slowly chipping away at it.....

:(

Thanks for the tips so far

What he said, you'd need to wire up all the broken traces. I outlined some of them here.

Use some fine wire, if you can get your hands on some kynar wire, that's best.

Awesome. Thanks for your help dude. :054:

Ill give you an update once I get the wire/soldering iron ready to go.

Okey Dokey...

The corrosion is not as BAD as thought it was.... :o

I have tested the traces around the corroded area, and they are mostly ok.

So far in my pic below, yellow are the traces that tested ok, the blue are bad or I am unsure the endpoints....

Do the bottom 3 look correct as far as the trace path goes?

I am also unsure of the trace to the top right, and the one between the AS244 and LS05 chips...

Does anyone have a MV6 dismantled on thier desk nearby? :D

Has anyone found a MV6 schematic yet? :unsure

Bottom 3 looks good, you might want to check the via to see if it's still connected to the other side before you do the patch.

As for the connection on the top right, I'm not sure (I haven't actually done any work on a NEO-GEO, yet), easiest way would be to cut the 74LS05 out (cut the pins and then later desolder them 1 by 1), look under for more damage, and replace the IC...

Another quick one, I was reading some other MV6 repair posts and there is mention of track rotting - which I assume is the browny fading I can see on my tracks - does this continue with the battery removed and the battery corrosion neautrilized with the vinegar/water/iso cleanup?

I see one of the suggestions is to sand it back lightly and repaint - does the above pic look bad enough to warrant these steps?

Thanks for your input chaps :)
