A 1.8ghz P4 with 256mb ram would be good for MAME, but I gather celerons are markably slower for MAME than the full blown P4s?

I also imagine there is no 3D support on board so no directx support for MAME?

Is there any chance to benchmark a MAME game (example: Mortal Kombat) on one of these? If it runs well, I'd be interested in one.

I am building a MAME config on one right now. I will give you some data shortly on MK performance. I will also confirm DirectX support.

These aren't necessarily pitched at a particular application but I believe they are great for MAME (SFF, Decent Specs etc)

OK - Benchmarks for MK - 65% averaged over about 3 minutes so obviously not up to the job there.

DirectX is supported fine - dragged Space invaders from 30% to 100% along with a few others I tested.

I decided to benchmark the game that I am setting up this particular board with and it came in at 95% so thanks for making me look a little closer. That isn't good enough for me.

HOWEVER I can throw in P4 1.8 if you want one. I will benchmark it with a P4 tomorrow when I get them from the unit and let you know. I may even swap the entire lot to P4 1.8 - I will see.

Let me know

Cool, when you quote a percentage do you mean frames out of 60 for example? eg 58/60 fps?

If you can do a P4 1.8 instead of the celeron for the $40 I'll definately take one?

OK - F11 only gives what appears to be a game speed. It also has something called "Skip 0/10" and on some games it has another bit of data called Partial Updates I think. The 65% one I assume is 65% of full game speed.

I haven't ever had the need to benchmark and F11 certainly doesn't provide me with any FPS data. i will have a look at the support file and see if I can find find the FPS option.

Thats strange, F11 in all the MAME builds I've seen shows the frame rate in the upper right corner of the screen, usually out of a max 60 from memory.

How smoothly does it appear to play?

Not on my version I am afraid. I have older versions so might take a look.

It was playable but I haven't played that game for over 10 years so hard to say for sure. I will run again with a P4 and see what the difference is ;-)

Catch you tomorrow night on that one.

OK - some performance info

Celeron 1.8 - 65%

P4 1.6 - 95%

P4 1.7 - 98%

P4 1.8 - 100%

I still haven't got around to earlier versions of MAME and may not get there for a day or two yet.

At least you know that 100% game speed on MK is achieved with a P4 1.8

If you want me to test anything else please let me know.

----------

These boards will now ship with P4 1.8GHz

Thanks to DMWORKING247 for pointing out that a Celeron 1.8 will be a little underpowered.

I can't change the title of the original post so hopefully this will get through to you all
