Victorian Bushfires

Recommended Posts

Just got home tonight from saving the inlaws house from catching fire from the inferno engulfing the Long Gully region of Bendigo.

Started up the Eaglehawk end of Bendigo tip in amoungst the commission estate there and made it way down south from the gusting winds today taking everything in its path.

Myself and 3 bro inlaws had to keep the house wet, gutters full of water and sent the MIL, dogs and possessions on there way while we stayed to try and protect the property, we experienced surrounding houses and land/trees get burnt to the ground.

My eyes are still sore:(

I have never been this close to such a thing in all my life and to see just how bad a situation like this can be on a hot day with exteme wind conditions.

80 to 100 houses lost not real sure of numbers, no loss of life yet, few admitted to hospital for smoke related conditions.

A couple of families of my wifes family have lost their houses(everything), at one stage a SES member came to us while we were on the roof etc with hoses and said clear out now its on its way as it was just 2 doors up then the wind changed direction so luck involved there, not so for the ones already gone:(

Then I find out there are outbreaks not far my my home around lake Eppalock but all is good.

Kilmore, Redesdale are other towns in danger as well as fires rage through there.

Fire crews everywhere coming as far as Mildura, Deniliquin etc.

Fucken Hell what a day!:o

hope all is well. i know the feeling of chasing fires to save houses

This is one reason why us firies have argued for years against banning controlled burns in the southwest of WA

perth townies want it banned due to the smoke that comes up the state but if we dont do it this is what can happen.

i know places that if i here is on fire im leaving the country because it wont be stopped.

few years ago my uncle had a fire that took out most of his place. luckily before he died of cancer last year he had installed to be safe for future reasons a fully automated fire emergency retic system. all hooked up via solar power as soon as it detects a certain heat range within 30 seconds it activates and sets of sprinklers all over the house roof.

wasnt cheap but the cost of a life far outways it

Nice save mate. We had smoke everywhere last night and I thought it was from Kilmore. Sky news didn't say anything about Bendigo fires. Think it was 9pm when I was watching. Glad it all worked out for you but so many people have lost everything.

Yes the deaths are terrible!!

I have been following this overnight and all day today on Sky News & ABC and cant believe the devestation.

I thought Ash Wednesday was bad when i was a 10 year old but this takes the cake,Its out of control and a day that will never be forgotton.

One of my favorite drive away holiday places being Marysville is 90% destroyed,I too feel sick in the stomach hearing of the deaths who are all people just like us that were simply trying to stay safe by staying in there properties or drive the hell out of there but were unlucky and unsucessful in doing so.

Deaths have just risen to 35....TERRIBLE!! My Cousin is a Police Officer and he tells me that the expectation as they find more throughout the day to hit 50 & beyond tonight.

I am tipping it will hit 100 as they find more and more burnt out cars and houses,Words just cant describe this and my thoughts go out to everyone in the affected areas and to those who have lost loved ones.

This is Victorias worst disaster day ever.

STAY SAFE if you are in the areas of the fires.

I've said it before and I will say it again:

Bring back Capital Punishment.

Matthew

HERE, HERE Matthew...... Nothing would satisfy me more than seeing these cowardly assholes (when and if they find them) treated as they should be.

As a volunteer firefighter for the past nine years I know the complete gut wrenching feeling you get when you come across helpless people trapped or even worse injured or deceased. Not having ever come across a deceased person in a fire, I have been to nine vehicle rescues where atleast one occupant in the car has been deceased on arrival or died during extraction.

HANG THE PRICKS I SAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good effort , Rampage !

Good to see you managed to keep the fires at bay.

Its a shame to hear how many people have lost their homes , especially when they announce some fires have been re-started by idiots.

Unbelievable !

How were your water supplies there while you were protecting the house?

Man, I didn't think it was that bad. I need to watch the news more.

We had a fire up here at Jilliby and Lake Munmorah National park both deliberately lit, The first one was a diversion from what i heard.

All i can say is these pricks should be strung up in Martin place and beaten to death.

Worse than Ash Wednesday fires now :(

Even reading about it now, it's scary shit

[ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ash_wednesday_fires[/ame]

The near-cyclonic strength of the wind change created an unstoppable firestorm that produced tornado-like fire whirls and fireballs of eucalyptus gas measuring over three metres across. Survivors reported that the roar of the fire front was similar to that of a jet engine, though multiplied fifty, a hundred times. The change in temperature and air pressure was so savage that houses were seen exploding before fire could touch them.

The freakish conditions spawned unique effects: a car was forced 90m along a road with its handbrake on, burning mattresses were seen hurtling through the air[24], steaks were cooked well-done in deep freezers, road surfaces bubbled and caught fire and sand liquefied to glass.

CSIRO experts later reported that, from evidence of melted metal, the heat of the fires after the change rose to 2000 ?C; exceeding that recorded during the Allied bombing of Dresden in World War II. In fact, the Ash Wednesday fires were measured at around 60,000 kilowatts of heat energy per metre, leading to similarities with the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.[
