For Sale: Custom Desktop Control Panels

Recommended Posts

Guys,

I'm halfway through completing up to 7 control panels (I'm making 9 at a time but intend to keep a few). Once these are gone I'm not making anymore unless my investigation into a 'mass produced' option pans out.

I'm looking for expressions of interest before I put the finishing touches on these sticks (ie artwork, buttons/joysticks, controller hacks etc).

They are very similar to the control panels in this thread with a few minor modifications, such as the front credit/start buttons are no longer recessed, and I have been as pedantic about some details such as painting the INSIDE of the box etc (trying to keep construction costs + time down)

Base price is approx $70 + extras + postage. All controllers include the mini-black buttons for start/select.

Extras can include:

  • Buttons & Joysticks supplied & fitted (cost of materials + $10)
  • Artwork sourced, printed & fitted ($10)
  • Hacked USB controller with quick connects ($15)
  • USB hub + usb cable + usb key with Mala installed for 'plug & play' control panel (ie plug it into any modern PC and you've got an arcade machine) = $30 (note, this is for materials & time, no charge for Mala software as it is not commercial. I cannot supply roms (obviously) you dump them in the /roms folder yourself). This option not available for "Playstation 2" controller type.
  • Groovy Game Gear Electric Ice pushbuttons with David_AVD's lighting controller (push the buttons and they light up). = $40 (includes the imported pushbuttons, LED controller, LEDs, wiring)

If you're interested in one, please post here and let me know your preference for USB controller or Playstation 2 style.

When I've finished the paint jobs of the available controllers I'll post them here. Price may be slightly higher or lower based on finish/special paint etc.

Box themes coming:

  • 3x Black (top customisable)
  • 1x Yellow with yellow buttons & yellow balltop. (update: AVAILABLE)
  • 1x Orange (thinner walls than normal). Supplied with orange buttons.
  • 1x White. Black vinyl top, white buttons & white balltop.
  • 2x Special edition boxes (stained & estapol Jarrah) + ($15)

Hi Dale,

I might be interested in the following:

Base control panel (Black)

PLUS Buttons & Joysticks supplied & fitted

PLUS Hacked USB controller with quick connects

Do you have an approximate cost for that config? How much would it cost to ship to Melbourne? :unsure

Matthew,

That depends what kind of joystick you want. I can supply a reconditioned Japanese 8-way stick with red balltop (not 4 way switchable) for $10, a Zippy for $15, or a Sanwa for $28.50

What colour handle/buttons are you after? I might be able to charge a bit less if I have them on hand and dont need to order more stuff.

So, $70+ (buttons $16.80) + (fitting $10) + (usb hack $15) + (joystick $?)

Are you after a stick with perspex top so that you can add your own art, or do you want a vinyl top? I'll have some photos soon.

so rounded down prices are:

= $120 (jap stick)

= $125 (zippy)

= $135 (sanwa)

Good question about postage, I should know from the last few I sent but I've forgotten. I'd estimate under $10, even if registered... but I'll get a quote when I can weigh and size a postage box.

dale

the extra $15 for a hacked controller with quick disconnects. Any thoughts on these seperate?

Narf_, once these control panels are finished I'll let you know if I have any left. If I do, I'll send you one for the $15 as you've helped me out plenty of times.

Other than that/for others for hack only, I'll hack them for <cost of controller> + $15 + post, if they're as simple as the DX ones. PS2 controllers are harder because they don't have a common ground, and I gather PS3/360 controllers are harder still.

Due to the US dollar the US$9 ones from DealExtreme arent as cheap anymore. There are several options still out there for other sources, I just liked the DX ones because they were a repeatable source, had a common ground, each button had its own easy solder pad, and they weren't matrixed. Despite the dollar they're still my recommended controller to hack.

Wow... I've seen your work before but didn't think you'd be doing them again! You have such creative power...!

I am interested in getting the white one. Just wondering if it's possible to replicate the one you did with Chun-Li again, with all Sanwa parts? Do you have parts with blue colour on hand?

Also I'm not sure but does the USB or PS2 interface work with PS3? Do you supply life time warranty while you still logon to the forum? :D

Hi Dale,

Can you please post a picture of each joystick type? :unsure As for buttons, colour doesn't matter (except pink!) as long as the button colour matches the joystick colour. I don't want artwork so black vinyl will be fine.

Thanks,

Matthew

Matt, I'll certainly post up some pics as soon as they're ready.. I was intending to have some completed boxes this weekened but I've had some major setbacks with black paint (as mentioned in another thread). I have to return the stupid cans and get new ones, which means the black panels may not be repainted until next weekend.

Thats a good question about USB & PS2... Maybe someone else could chime in. I know PS3 has USB ports, and I know you can buy PS2 to PS3 adaptors, but not sure whether either is 'plug & play'.

Its definately possible for me to whip up another Chun Li stick. I'm pretty sure I've got blue buttons on hand, and I MIGHT have a blue balltop left. I tried the Chun Li stick with blue buttons originally but to be honest I thought the white turned out nicer?

As mentioned the function buttons would be the little black ones not the full size pushbuttons on the original Chun Li stick. A Sanwa joystick is easy to get, but did you mean Sanwa pushbuttons (ie the snap in round topped ones) too? Perhaps a link? Any of that is possible, There will just be more time & postage involved if I have to go to various suppliers.

Sorry Dale, I didn't mean photos of the completed control panel, just the different joysticks. I don't know what they look like so I would like to see a photo of each one to determine which type I would like in my control panel.

Cheers,

Matthew

The PS3 can use USB Gamepads. I think it is a bit of hit and miss with the USB Gamepads on the PS3, some work, some don't.

General Rule: Plug it in to a "Virgin Win XP PC" (Virgin as in no gamepad drivers or utilities) and what you see is what you will get on your PS3.

These USB ones get detected as "Generic USB Controller" I've never had to install any drivers.

ANybody want to donate me a 360 and a PS3 for testing purposes? :D

Hey Matt,

Not sure if you've already found out but here's info on joysticks if that helps:

Tim

If it helps any...

I would be happy to supply discounted parts "only for AA members" who want to buy these controllers from you Dale.

I read from the website that in2amusements is getting Sanwa buttons soon - perhaps you can source those for me too Dale?

Thanks Tim, however I would like a photo of each of the joysticks that Dale listed earlier:

1) a reconditioned Japanese 8-way stick with red balltop (not 4 way switchable)

2) a Zippy

3) a Sanwa

I know what a Zippy looks like but the other 2 are a mystery.

Sanwa is in that thread too, but I'll need to take a photo of the other one. From above the panel it looks kind of like a zippy with a thicker shaft (and has a red balltop). Much better mechanism underneath though.

There is more than one Sanwa joystick in that thread, I wasn't sure which one you were referring to. By the way, doesn't the Chun Li control panel have an MCA joystick in it? :unsure

Yeah fair enough. The sanwas I use are the photos I posted above (balltop or batton top, black or red handle).

The Chun Li had an MCA stick yes, which I had laying around at the time. I don't have any MCAs left. Mind you, I can supply the box and you fit your own joystick, or I can fit any joystick you like (especially if you order it), you just need to make sure that its not too 'deep' to fit in the panel (there is 45mm clearance under the control panel).

For example, 'happ' sticks are too fat underneath and wont fit.

I'll wait until you post a photo of the Japanese stick before I confirm my order ;)

Attached is the latest progress photo guys.

I've got the 8 of 9 control panels built, primed, and painted... but I've been waiting for good weather to put their top coats & clearcoats on.

I have already hacked several USB/PS2 controllers ready to go.

As you can see, the weather is shit and I need several hours of sunlight (weekends) to do this. Once the painting is finished, its just a matter of fitting the top panel, artwork and USB/PS2 controller.

I appologise for any of you waiting on these. Despite the fact I paint undercover, this much moisture/cold temperature is not going to yield a good result if I'm impatient.

Ok, despite the rain setback I decided to complete one of the other "special edition" control panels I mentioned that had already been stained and coated with estapol. I just needed to stretch & staple the vinyl and screw it together.

This stick is stained jarrah timber with soft 'leather feel' black vinyl (not the usual 'plastic' vinyl on CPs). The vinyl has been spray-adhesive glued down, stretched and stapled.

The joystick is a Sanwa with a red batton top, and the red buttons are a japanese make (a lot like the happs but with a more pronounced divot in the middle).

Since I've been delayed with the painted models, those who have already expressed interest have first dibs at this one, otherwise its up for sale. $150 with your choice of Playstation 2 or USB interface.

Hi Dale,

I'll take that controller if it is still available, it looks superb! :023: I would like the USB interface too please.

Just a couple of questions about it:

1) Is it possible to switch the joystick from 8-way to 4-way and vice-versa?

2) Since it is using a keyboard hack, is there any problems with ghosting?

Cheers,

Matthew
