Do I sand stained wood before applying estapol?

Recommended Posts

Hmm, I couldn't find the woodwork forum so I'll put it in general :)

I've just used a stain on Jarrah and it looked beautiful when wet, but it started to go very 'matte' as it dried.

I gather I need to apply an Estapol (instructions confirmed this), but I was wondering am I meant to sand back the stain with some 400 grit (thereabouts) first, or just spray some estapol straight over it?

Do I then sand or somehow buff the estapol again after its dried?

Gloss or Matt estapol for a dark stained Jarrah control panel? I'm thinking Gloss.

Be careful Dale, as uneven sanding might cause the stain colour to vary. Apply a coat of gloss finish over it and wait for it to fully cure. Then sand lightly and apply another coat. Is applied properly it will be spanky-shiney.

Check the estapol can for instructions. (400 grit is a good choice for between coat sanding. You just want to cut off the shine, thats all)
