What else do you collect?

Recommended Posts

I know we're all arcade & pinball nuts here but I was wondering if anyone else out there collects other games/computers or other stuff. I started collecting computer games in the mid 80's when I got my first G&W Donkey Kong for Xmas (man we sat on the nature strip playing this thing for hours and hours) and have pretty much kept every handheld, tabletop, computer etc etc that I have ever bought or received, to the point where the only consoles I don't have are PS3, Wii & 2 or 3 of the retro stuff. Also, gone a bit nuts with the 80's computers (Vic 20, C64, Amstrad, Amiga etc). Basically I collect any computer game. My wife seems to think that I've probably taken it too far, but I'm hoping this thread proves her wrong. Besides, I've repeatedly told her that I was collecting this stuff before we met ... if you know what I mean!! :evil Edited by Etch71

I don't collect other computer games and or consoles but I do collect other items. As a volunteer firefighter for the past 10 years, I started collecting fire brigade patches and parafanalia about 7 years ago . Currently I have over 3000 patches from all over the world.

I also collect sporting memorabilia and I have done for over 20 years. Several years ago (about 10) I refined my collection to be fine art and game/match worn and or used equipment ONLY. Currently my personal collection is valued at over $100K and has become a nest egg for my kids when and if they ever need to go to University / Medical school etc, etc (wishful thinkin I know).

Or could be a nice retirement package for yourself. Are the patches all OZ or do you collect overseas stuff as well? I've got a limited amount of AFL & boxing memorabilia (WEG posters, and some signed jumpers that were given to me as birthday gifts). I always tell the kids it's nice to have a hobby & collect things. I think my 8 year old son takes after me. He's already got a few collections on the go.

coins, old notes, my oldest coin is BC apparently

Hey I've got a $50 note that has a printing error on it. The artwork is perfect but the serial numbers have shifted down and are cut in half. Also I think it might have part serial number from the note above it on the uncut sheet. I've wedged it inbetween one of my books, should dig it out and send you a photo. Any idea what something like this might be worth? Took it to a note shop in Melb once and the bloke told me he'd never seen anything like it. He offered to buy it for $60 at which point I returned it to the envelope and walked out. Also, the other day I went to the bank to get change and ended up getting some really crisp $10 notes, upon closer inspection turned out to be 10 sequencial $10 notes. I've kept these as well. If the wife finds out I'm collecting money she'll kill me! Are sequencial notes worth anything nowdays?

Casino poker chip sets - have ~12000 chips currently. About as costly as collecting pins.

M&M dispensers, this one started when I was 19, growing up I always wanted one, but didn't know where to find one. I've bought pretty much every one i've seen since the first one I saw at Woolies. In my travels I've made two detours to M&Ms world in Vegas and New York. I only collect what I term 'full size' dispensers, but also have some other random M&M crap that people have given me over the years. Currently have 50 or so full size dispensers.

Books in general. I've got several garden sheds full.

Anything die cast in original star wars crap. Not the new fangled stuff.

Original Transformers, in unopened boxes - only have a few of these as they go for $500+ each depending on the model. Luckily I was a collector from way back and kept a few from when I was a kid in the boxes :D:D

Sidchrome spanner sets - don't ask.

Come to think of it, there are probably 20 or 30 random things I compulsively collect that have no value.

I've got problems.

I collect VZ200s and VZ300s and related newsletters, magazines and so on. These were an 8-bit microcomputer imported by DSE from 1983 until around 1988 or 1989, VZ200 first and then VZ300 which was a new improved model.

By being specific I can keep the collection under control, sort of. And it is less expensive this way!

8/16 bit computers to an extent, but that would be never ending so its kinda half hearted these days.

I have a fair collection tho

Spectrum 48K x3

Spectrum 128K

Spectrum +2

Sinclair QL

Commodore 64

Oric 1

Oric Atmos

Enterprise 64

Yamaha CX5M

Atari STM

Atari STFM

Atari STE

Atari Falcon

Acorn 3000

Acorn 3010

Acorn 3020

I used to have a lot of Amiga gear but it was taking up too much space and someone offered me a load of arcade boards for it.

Basically anything that interests me on ebay, its usually techie tho.

For a while there I collected shot glasses, especially when I travelled for vacation or for work.

I'd estimate I have 300-odd shotglasses, including handpainted ones from Mexico, or commercial ones like "Hard Rock" or "Planet Hollywood" locations that no longer exist.

I just collect random crap from the 70's and 80's, and decorate my shed with it. Stuff like my 20 odd smurfs, Marx Bros Lamp, Model Star Trek Enterprise, Album Covers, and Robots, Buzz and Woody Dolls (well they arent 70s or 80s) that sit on top of my 48in1. When I am at the markets I sometimes see something that screams...... shed decoration! Then I haggle to own it.

Hi Etch, my old man collects notes and coins with my help, mainly Australian stuff but we've been branching out lately with some interesting overseas items- like a Bank of Zimbabwe 100 billion dollar note - legal tender but not enough to even buy a loaf of bread there nowdays :o

With regards to the error note I'd hang onto it as major errors like that are very rare due to the mint's strict quality control processes. It would probably be worth quite a sum to the right collector. The guy who offered you 60 bux is a crook and I'm glad you didn't let him rip you off!

Sets of sequential serial numbered notes can be valuable but really only to someone who collects that sort of thing - the same with repeating digits in serial numbers, "radar" serials, etc. What really matters is the condition (yours are aUNC/UNC so big tick) and the year of mintage - the first 2 digits of the serial on polymer (plastic) notes tell you this. In general the older the better because there are obviously less mint condition 1996 $10 notes around than 2007 ones.

There is a great online coin and note forum I recently found where you can get lots of good discussion on aussie notes and coins - PM me if you're keen and I'll give you the web address. Also Ebay is a good source of values - see what kind of price sets of consecutive serial notes are selling for as an example.

Cheers

LT.

Captain cook 50c Pieces - I have a hundred or so, also the round '66 ones - About 50 - 60 of em

Olympic coins - Sydney - full set

Old chess sets, i have a gold franklin one, but never play it LOL

The great part about 1966 50c pieces is they are 80% silver so as the silver price appreciates over the years so does their value, regardless of their condition. The silver content alone in the 66s makes them quite popular as collectibles - you'll often see bulk lots of them selling for nice prices - a lot of 10 recently sold for $91 on Ebay so you're sitting on a nice valuable collection there dezbaz :023:

Cheers

LT.
