Spray Gun - Recommendations

Recommended Posts

I am planing on buying myself a spray gun to ramp up the quality of some of the projects I am doing. I have never used a spray gun before so please excuse the ignorance. I have read a couple of threads hear on the subject but I still have a few questions.

1. I have an Air Compressor which is designed for camping/tyres etc. It does 90 litres/minute, Max working pressure 150PSI, Max restart pressure 200psi. Does that sound like it is powerful enough to run a spray gun.

2. What brand/model/type spray gun is recommended? Do the cheap ones from supercheap/bunnings etc do the job well or am I better off spending more money for better results?

3. If painting over laminate what type of primer and over coast would I use?

4. If I spray in a garage does it paint other things in there or am I better off moving down the driveway into open air?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Cheers,

Ian

1) I have a 2.5 HP and paint at about 60-100 psi depends on the paint.

2) mine is a cheep I think it was a putty gun 2.5mm not the best gun but it works and the paint jobs look nice. I put the pain non enamel with a bit if water to thin it. I should use thinner but it has been working fine so far.

3) Not sure on that. I used bumper coat black on some and it worked fine it has a plastic primer in it. game it a quick sand 1st and the paint is nice and hard.

4) The paint dries in the air very fast and you get paint dust every where give your self lots of space..

Ive got 3 guns a STAR brand suction feed good gun for cabinates ect (large jobs)approx $120

medium to small jobs I find a small gravity feed gun a must approx $110

small jobs single action air brush $120 (playfields, back glasses)

all medium paints can be used with all.

Up date: most signwriters use turps base paints on glass or laminates.Seems to stick well, thin paint with turps to easy.

I only paint in shed if its to windy if I have to I throw some plastic sheets around $2 each from bunnings. Other wise better for your health out side.

and for your size compressor the medium gravity feed gun.Its like using a pressure pack can but heaps more control.

Wait - does that compressor have a air tank and regulator, or is it just a pump unit? (the camping bit makes me think it is a tankless compressor)

Cheers
