Pictures below. It's the one with L-5 on it yeah?? Peter yep. the one with the L-5 sticker. Note the "key" - the v-groove up one end of the chip. be sure the groove on the new chip is up the same end as the groove on the old chip - that way you will orient it correctly. the groove is also marked on the circuit board. :)
AskJacob
Yes, that is the one. Make sure the little notch as shown in your pictures is pointing to the left with the new one when you put it in. Ignore which way the stuck on label is (can be stuck on any old way) - that notch in the end of the chip is the only way to tell it is the right way round. Good luck, and be gentle pulling out the old one. That chip hasn't moved in ages, so may be slightly "fused" to the socket - it will come out, just need some coaxing. Cheers Jacob echo echo echo I'm too slow :D

Super Moderator stuba Posted January 5, 2009 Super Moderator Share Posted January 5, 2009 gently and slowly, make sure all pins lined up correctly and none folded under, no sudden maniacal force attacks ;)
Nug
Got the sucker out without breaking any pins:p now just need to wait for the new one and in she goes/any tips.. Peter put the chip in a chunk of polystyrene to protect the pins and also anti static duties. regards
AskJacob
But the little groove in mines is to the right?? isn't it.. Peter That's what I said wasn't it?;) Sorry, you are right, can't believe I mucked that up! With a new ROM, you can sometimes find it rather difficult to insert into the socket as the legs are "splayed" apart from the factory, like this: /==\ (end on view of the chip) Whereas if you look at the old chip, the legs will look like this: |==| (end view of the chip) So to make inserting the new one easier, you can press all the legs per side gently on a table and bend them so they sit at right-angles to the chip body. As for storing the old one, as Nug says pop it into styrofoam - before you do though, wrap the piece of foam with foil to make it anti-static ... without the foil just inserting and removing the chip from the foam will build up a decent static charge. David_AVD
put the chip in a chunk of polystyrene to protect the pins and also anti static duties. regards I think Nug meant black antistatic foam, not the highly static white Styrofoam. As AJ says, if you only have white foam, cover it with a layer or two of aluminium foil first.

GORGAR 1
ITS IN Thanks ken I recieved the new ROM today-I was very careful putting it in so careful in fact I was crapping myself that I didn't bend the pins..I pushed the ROM in and it didn't really click in just went in a little but I made sure all pins are in and they look to be-I made sure with a gentle push and all looks good. Turned machine "on" and all's good and YES I have the "ball save" function and just love the music and flashers at the end of each game..And of course my post wouldn't be right if there weren't any PICTURES.. Thanks to all for your advice it's always welcomed.. P:S- does it always load the new ROM up when you turn machine on???. Peter

Your old one did it too, just didn't show you anything while it does the self checks - its a feature used on later machines (and the newer home rom you have). It's just the CPU doing some housekeeping and checks (checking the rom is ok, ram etc). Congrats mate, next one will be a lot easier! The chip looks snugged in properly in the pic.
