but i just used a prog. called

Patch-A-Bobble..

created by Karl Stenerud

it lets you create your own custom levels in Bubble Bobble.

then save them for running in mame...

good fun.

you can customize all 102 levels.

Awesome... new news to me! I know there are a lot of Bubble Bobble Fans on this site (myself included).

We need to pool together and somehow make a new 100 levels, from the AA community :)

Say, 10 members x 10 levels each? Pick a level range and design levels accordingly to the difficulty?

Does the utility allow for importing/exporting levels (eg if two people made 10 each)

Have you got a link to the util?

If this goes ahead I want dibs on 4, 14, 24, 34, 44, etc...

I think that's a good way to run it.

Person 1 does level 1, 11, 21, etc

Person 2 does level 2, 12, 22, etc..

and etc..

That way you'll be guaranteed that your creation gets played.

ok i can merge them .

its a pain in the arse but i think this is a cool lil project and

i think it will be worth it for all involved.

i think biggeorge's idea of Person 1 does level 1, 11, 21, etc

Person 2 does level 2, 12, 22, etc..

and etc..

makes it fair.....

*******for this to work*******

we all need to use the same rom:

bublbobl.zip (180 KB (185,009 bytes)

I'm testing the saved rom using mame32 v0.62

I originally tried ver. 0.36 (Kept saying file was curruptwhen run in mame).

use whats works for you

this is how i used it

I extract the rom to a folder called........................ ORIG.

extract the Patch-A-Bobble to a folder called.......PROG.

start the pbobble.exe and ignore the error (its just not finding the rom yet )

then click locate rom and take it to where you extracted it (ORIG FOLDER)

then click on one of the files (It really doesn't matter what one)

now the editor loads up and you can work out the rest...

if you click the "help button and about this patch file"just don't modify anything

don't type anything in author or about this patch file or i can't merge the rom.

only modify your assigned levels and save a patch file to send to me ..for merging. name your patch file the number i assign you.

eg. 1.bub

to test your modified rom click file - save roms

now save it to your ORIG.folder and click the file 68705.bin(to name it)

then create a zip folder named bublbobl.zip

and add the files in the ORIG folder to that zip.

then paste that zip folder to your rom folder in your mame prog

refresh the list and play your new level's

I'm happy to help with any Questions

I'll take 7,17,27,37,47... etc

Shall we leave level 100 as is? I say so.

Btw I reckon it'll take more than a week to get these 'tuned' well enough to be a viable alternative to the original... we should all play through them and make sure the 'flow' of difficulty is correct.

download Patch-A-Bobble ( bubblebobble editor) from this page.

Hold up...

That link is version 1.1, I found a version 1.4 of the editor here?

http://www.romhacking.net/utils/142/

Can anybody find the homepage of the editor to make sure we have the latest (same) version?

surely there has to be an easier way to test the level you built than to save it and play through? Thats going to be hell for levels 30+, let alone level 99.

I've just whipped up a possible level 7... When I played the rom the 'level' looked fine but the monsters (type, quantity and start position) was per the original level design, not my modified one. Wtf.

try this.

create your level then copy n paste it to level 1 to test in mame..

try this.

after you have made your level placed the monsters in position

and just before saving rom to test in mame

click monster opps - test drop pattern

to make sure they fall where u want em.

i just tried this with level 7 and it worked fine.

hey dmworking247

i fogot to mention .

thats a cool pacman themed level.

looking foward to playing it.

OK, guys I have figured out an easy way to do your testing.

Download this ZIP file..

Empty out your MAME/ROMS folder

Extract the attached zip file into your MAME/ROMS folder

Edit your levels as per instructions, Save your level in the ROM file, pick one, doesn't matter.

To test your level, drop to a DOS prompt (Win-R and type CMD) and type in

cd\mame\roms

test

Leave that window open and next time you need to test, simply switch back to the DOS window and type "test" to run the batch file.

The test.bat file simply adds anything new to the bublbobl.zip file and opens it up in mame.

Hope this helps, coz after 10 minutes of testing I really started to get the shits with this utility not having a simple "Click here to play your level" button..

Also helps a lot if you edit the MAME.ini to turn off the sound, also to fly past the title music use F10 and F10 again when the game starts.

Level 4 is complete. Took me about an hour to do. I think we should allow more than a week for this project.

Perhaps wrap it up by the end of January??

I'm trying not to change the speed time and rate too much

as it makes the monsters more aggresive as the game

progresses.(although it might need a tweak hear and there

to make the level more playable or to suit the layout).

i copyed and pasted 5 test levels i created to

levels 1-5 for easier testing and had to tweak the layout

a lil.

they are more playable than i thought they would be.

also when using water filled balloons make sure

your level layout has no cradel shaped platforms

or it will trap the water stopping you from progressing in

the game. (I beleve this a bug in one of the real levels in the game

don't know what level though).

By the way someone: AWESOME levels... worthy of the original game for sure.

I particularly like the lightning bolt and the 'bub / bob' level.

Btw I think your original "Aussie Arcade" sample should be level 1

(Level 1 is meant to be so easy that you just shoot & pop anyway).

I'm not sure why your monsters and teleporters dont save.

how do you load and save your rom

start to finish.

r u saving it to an extracted rom file then re-zipping .

once you have been assigned your number

you have 1 week to mail me your levels (#.bub file)

or your number goes back up for grabs.

(i want to do this quick (quicker the better)).

Sumone...

This is your project, so you can "run it however you like". :)

BUT - may I ask... why the rush?

If this is going to be an "Aussie Arcade level pack", made by people who LOVE Bubble Bobble,

wouldn't it make sense to let people take their time a bit,

so they can make sure ALL the levels are really fun to play?

Isn't quality/fun a bit more important than "getting it done in less than a week"? :unsure
