Heres my Barrel O' Fun.

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

As promised Ive attached some pics of my project.

I bought a brand new 90ltr Barrel, made from Pine, rather than Oak.....looks nicer when varnished, well I think so.

I also had the barrel made with 1 piece heads (top & bottom) makes it easier to use a jigsaw on.

So the 1st stage was to varnish the barrel, I gave it 3 coats and I think it looks great.

The 2nd stage was to insert the 12" LCD monitor I bought off ebay for $55.00, I stripped it down to just the bare LCD panel, and inserted it into the top of the barrel, then I had to paint the top of the barrel and the LCD surround with a matt black paint. I also put castors on the bottom, it doesnt look like its on wheels, as you cant see them at all.

The 3rd stage was to put the joysticks and buttons.......I spent ages thinking of what style of control panel, so in the end I just bought some big drill bits from Bunnings, and drilled into the barrel.........Ive put some illuminated "Insert Coin for Credt" buttons, but they need making flush, as they stick out a bit much.

I just need to put in the 1 &2 Player buttons, and put the glass in the top....this will be here on Tuesday, Ive opted for clear glass, as the tinted stuff they had was too dark.

My "Barrel O' Fun" has the latest MAME installed on a stripped down Dell GX260 Optiplex, I had to get a new hard drive, so I got a 160 Gig Western Digital, bigger than what I needed, but it was the same price as a 80 Gig......plenty of room for expansion, I suppose.

I needed to sort the Mame/MALA Configuration out, as Im a newbie to this, but with some help from DKONG.......Thank you very much!! Ive got it sorted out.

I will post some more pics over the weekend.

Happy gaming!!

Paul

Thanks for that.

It is actually quite comfortable to play.........well, I did spend 8 hours or so playing/setting it up today.

I didnt want any boxes on the side of the barrel, so this was the only option really. Both buttons can be accessed with just one finger, the games I have on it are Frogger, Galaga, Galaxians, Pheonix, Pac Man etc etc, so quite easy to operate.

Regards,

Paul

More Pics of my MAME Barrel

As Promised heres some more pics.

These are of the 1 & 2 Player controls, and a Ms PacMan game.

I havent taken any pics of the inside, its a bit cluttered in there! I'll see what I can do.

This project has been a complete pain in the ass to complete, as space is very limited, I had to take the screen out, so I could get the motherboard, power supply and hard drive inside, then the monitor didnt want to go back in right, so now its a bit recessed, but shouldnt be too noticable when the glass is on.

Regards,

Paul

Sweet job...would ave almost considered leaving it unstained...

I only varnished it so it would match the wood floor I have in my Games Room, it fits in quite well, I think.

I make them and stain them as per customers requirements.

Paul

  • 3 weeks later...

I suppose they have the same thing in common.......they are wine barrels :lol

Lauries one Inspired me to make this one, I saw it on EBay and he introduced me to this forum.

My one is a full "brand new" barrel, not a half, and I have put glass over the top so it can be used as a table, also the controls are in my barrel, not on plastic boxes.

Im pleased with how it has turned out.
